I really liked it, it was a great plane book (easy to read, very entertaining). The ending was a little unsatisfying though.

Nobody describes a fine French meal like Mayle, or shows such evident joy in the French countryside.

But... this one is not thrilling, nor particularly humorous. It gets by. He’s written better books.

"That's not doing nothing. That's living. It still goes on in the country."
"What do you mean?"
"They have this quaint idea that there's more to life than work and television. ... They play their boules, they hunt, they laugh a lot, they're addicted to conversation, they spend hours at the table."

A charming caper. Probably more appealing if you've lived in or are familiar with the South of France.

To be fair, I read this while quite distracted so maybe I would have enjoyed it more at another time. However, this is my second book by Mayle and I just have trouble connecting to his writing. This should have been a fun romp but was kind of boring.
