Meh. One dimensional characters and a storyline that isn’t that original. 3 ⭐️

Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.

What a great book, set in Lapland (makes me want to spend Christmas there).

Sylvie was ditched by her husband to be and should be jetting of on her honeymoon. Instead her and her best friend Nari book a trip to lapland, choosing the town where her first love was from (he was on an exchange trip when they met at uni).

What happens when she meets Stellan again?

I was lucky enough to get an ARC (Or Advanced listening copy?) of this, and I enjoyed it a lot!

Christmas at Frozen Falls was an easy and quick to read (or rather listen to) story that quickly had me glued to my earphones!

The narration was very well done, and I enjoyed the no drama friendship between the two women at the heart of the story. It was such a nice breath of fresh air to not have any sort of bitchiness or squabbles, but a stable pair of best friends.

The scenery of icy lapland was just utterly stunning. I could feel the snow and the freezing cold air, and enjoyed every second of my bookish holiday! It definitely was the major pull for me throughout the book.

I liked the romance, though it didn't grab me as much as it did in some other books. As the backdrop and the characters themselves were more than fascinating enough to always keep me well engaged I didn't mind the actual romance to be a bit less gripping than it could have been.

What I did enjoy though, was the cultural differences not just being shoved aside, or a lovely quirk, but actually providing some friction and needing to work on.
I also loved the contrast of shy, laid back, insecure and brazen, adventurous and self reliant characters. It nicely rounded of the story and made it a smoother and more interesting read.

And there's not just dogs - but puppies. Who doesn't love some puppies!

I have to admit I requested this thinking it would be a fluff listen while I wedding prepped. I was so wrong. The characters are wonderful and the storyline could not be any more lovely. I literally could not stop listening.

Sylvie a bride, basically left at the alter, converts her honeymoon to a dazzling Christmas vacation with her best friend up inside the arctic circle. While planning she realizes an old flame lives in the area.

Cue Stellan a hunky, romantic, and caring man who runs the resort that Sylvie is staying at. I’m guessing you can figure out if they rekindle their love. However, the strong voices each character brings to the table are what make this book unforgettable that and the long list below for a perfect winter warmup.

Husky sled rides

A reindeer herder

Christmas magic all over the place

The quite that snow brings to the world

A glass cabin for watching the northern lights

Genuine growth in every character

it’s definitely got me in the mood for christmas! i loved how it was a dual pov and how there were two stories running alongside each other both with some lighthearted romance and winter vibes. it was a really easy read and i got through it really quickly - i always love books about travelling so i can read about places that i haven’t seen before. it adds an element of adventure to the story and i really enjoyed it.

Title Christmas at Frozen Falls

Author Kiley Dunbar

Release Date September 4, 2019

Description from Amazon

Sylvie Magnusson is going to be lonely this Christmas. Instead of jetting off for her honeymoon, she’s freezing at home in Cheshire. Guess that’s what happens when your fiancé dumps you a week before your wedding…

Sylvie’s best friend, Nari, plans a trip to see the Northern Lights and get Sylvie’s mojo back. But as their Lapland getaway approaches, Sylvie realises that Frozen Falls is the hometown of Stellan Virtanen, her dreamy Finnish ex-boyfriend, the one that got away.

When they meet, Stellan’s still gorgeous – and her heart is warmed when he shows her the romantic delights of Lapland (as well as some adorable Husky puppies). But when she returns to England, can she really leave Stellan behind? Or will she find that her heart belongs in the frozen North?

Initial Thoughts

Ok, so the name of the game for the month of December is finish up all outstanding items in NetGalley. I actually purposefully saved a Christmas book for December and I’m so glad this is the one I chose.

Some Things I Liked

Two stories for the price of one! I loved that we got to see two completely different types of love stories develop during this book. Sylvie and Nari are both amazing and totally different characters who were at different places in their lives when the story began. I loved seeing the separate chapters about each of them.
Sylvie as a narrator. She was a wonderful narrator and I loved her inner thought monologues throughout the book.
Christmas as a setting. I love Christmas time – and I think it always makes an amazing backdrop to a cute story. There are so many magical elements: cookies, snow, decorating trees, need I go on? Everything about using Christmas in this story made it better.

Final Thoughts

I’m so glad I saved this book. I loved it and it really kicked me into Christmas-gear. (I’m super behind on my shopping and schedule right now!) But, this story was so cute and it made me want to get back on track.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Recommendations for Further Reading

The Last Note by Grace McGinty – if you liked all of the feelings and slightly older characters in this story, give The Last Note book a try. It’s a bit more of a tear-jerker, but still has a ton of emotions and a really nice story.
The Christmas Countdown by Donna Ashcroft – if you like cute, Christmas rom-coms, check out this book.
Coming Home to Glendale Hall by Victoria Walters – if you like Gilmore Girls and adorable Christmas stories, give this book a read.

This book starts out with the main character, Sylvie Magnusson getting dumped by her fiancé a week before her wedding! She then goes on an adventure with her BFF and runs into her ex-bf, who is also "the one that got away."

As much as that sounds like a cute premise for a cozy Christmas read, the synopsis basically summarizes the entire book. I wish I had enjoyed this more, but unfortunately, I couldn't wait for it to be over.

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to listen to this in exchange for an honest review!

I loved this book. We follow Sylvie who was dumped weeks before her wedding and her best friend Nari as they rearrange Sylvie's honeymoon to go to Lapland over Christmas. There Sylvie and Nari both connect with guides of the resort and go on the adventure of a lifetime. The guide Sylvie connects with is her ex boyfriend from college who had been studying abroad for a semester. This second chance romance is beautiful.

First off, the descriptions of Lapland, the food (as different as it may be), the culture, and the landscape have me dreaming of a visit. It was incredible. All I want to do now is buy a ticket to Lapland, take a dog sled ride, stay in a log cabin in the middle of the snowy forest, and experience a world completely different than my own. If a book can convince me to add a place to my "places to travel" list then it is off to a good start.

We have a second chance romance between Sylvie and Stellan that just makes your heart melt. I loved the two of them together and the back story of each of the characters made them seem so real and helped to build the believable chemistry between them. Nari's romance was adorable as it was sudden. unexpected, and was an opposites attract.

The Christmas element of this was perfectly done. It wasn't forced into every chapter, it was simply a holiday that was present in the story. If you want to be transported to a new part of the world and read about 2 cozy love stories this is the book for you.
