04/19/18 4.5/5 One of those books that will just stick with you for the rest of your life. I’m glad I reread it so many years later.

Nicks 4th grade class is reading this. It's a good story, but would not recommend for younger readers. The topic is a dark and the issues the main character encounters are too complicated for kids to fully grasp. That said, it would be a great book for teens. Should spawn some excellent discussions

This made me question my views on a lot of things and I'd honestly reread it in a heartbeat.

I was very excited when I found this book, English is not my first language and in middle school this was my first lengthy book to read and help me learn and improve my English. I remember reading it a couple of times I believe almost three times, twice in English and once in Spanish. Now that I've read it again it is no surprise to me why I enjoyed this book so much. Hattie reminds me so much of myself and her relationship with her family does too. I also think it was very helpful that the writing is very straight forward, the feelings, the settings, the conversations. I really enjoyed this bool, I am really glad I took the chance to look for it again after almost 7 years since reading it for the first time.

Excerpts from A Corner of the Universe
Excerpt 1
"Some days," I say, "I feel like I don't belong anywhere in that world. That world out there." I point to Grant. "People walk down our street and people drive down it and people ride there bicyck=les down it and all of them, even the ones I know, could be from another planet. And I'm a visiting alien."
"And aliens don't belong anywhere," Adam finishes for me, "except in their own little corners of the universe."
Excerpt 2
Adam buries his head in his hands, then turns and leans into me. At last I know it's okay to touch him, and I wrap both my arms around him.
"No one knows," says Adam, "what it is like."
"No," I reply, although I think I might know more than most people.
"You are not an alien, Hattie. I am the only true alien."
But Adam is wrong. I am a true alien, too.
