I’m surprised I even made it to half way because nothing at all happened that kept my interest. There was too many superheroes that were brought in, I couldn’t keep up with trying to imagine and remember what they looked like so I started imagining the power rangers but in all sorts of different colours

I absolutely adore The Lunar Chronicles, but Marissa Meyer's next attempt, Heartless was a huge letdown, especially since I love Alice's Adventures in Wonderland so dearly and I felt like the whole book was just mean spirited.

So, it was because of the huge misstep that was Heartless that I approached this book with a heavy dose of apprehension, especially considering the subject matter. I think good stories about superheroes are rad, but because of the absolutely massive success of Marvel's Cinematic Universe, it's easy to write something that feels so done, so stale because the market for superheroes is oversaturated and a lot of people are getting tired of it.

With all that said, I'm so glad I took that leap, despite my apprehension, because this book is fucking rad. Marissa Meyer proved her undeniable talent in breathing new life into old, been-there-done-that stories with The Lunar Chronicles and she brought that talent back in spades here.

Every single piece of the story, the way the characters interacted, the way information and exposition was gently but steady spooled out, tenderly taking the reader's hand and guiding you through the story, the way backstory was crafted, the way everyone's different powers and talents were demonstrated...all of it, every last bit was so much fun.

I want Adrian's power to bring his drawings to life, and I love how we're shown all the different, mind-blowing, creative ways he can use a marker and force of will to work through every situation he's put in, life-threatening or not.

I loved Nova's whole arc, how she doesn't so much as show signs of flipping sides but instead pulls herself closer and closer to true neutral between the Anarchists and the Renegades with every action.

There were so many things about this book that it would be too tiresome to list them all, so I'm going to bring things to a close here. I'm positively bursting with excitement about this book and I'll be waiting with bated breath to see how everything comes crashing together in the second half of this kickass story.

See you about all this in November, once I have Archenemies in hand.
