Recently started reading Brian Wood's X-Men. This collection was a lot of fun, but I will admit as someone whose knowledge of the X-Men universe (multiverse?) extends as far as the early 90s cartoon, I had to do a little research (mostly for my own edification, not because the story necessitated it.)

Wasn't too blown away or anything... I find lately all new x-men and uncanny x-men are falling short of their potential

Okay. I like the art, which saves it. The artists are all good and do well by the characters.

The writing was a mess. It gets loss in the middle and peters out weakly at the end. Only a few characters had motivations that were clear or understandable. Weak writing.Sorry but this is not even Bendis at mediore.

Good art, but the story represents Marvel at its worst. Lots of repetitive fights and arguments with no real consequence. This should probably not have been a collection.

This was all right, then pages and pages of fighting each other and ugh. I ended up skimming the last issue and a half. Haven't read tons of X-Men but I'm sick of a) time travel shenanigans OH NO THE TIMESTREAM! b) X v. X fighting good grief and c) "these children are not trained/ready for fighting!" cut to those kids managing to do the right thing. Surely there are other plot ideas out there?

Well this was surprisingly great. I normally hate the time travel plots (except the original Days of Future Past story) but this, despite being really complicated, just sort of worked.

When it was being published I didn't love that it was spread over so many books, that felt more marketing strategy than story-telling but once its all put in order in the Trade Paper Back it really really works.

Kitty Pryde is a stand out character in this, Bendis's involvement showing strong there.

Way too many characters to keep straight, drawn by different artists in different ways, including several versions of the same characters time-travelling and being in the same place at the same time. I've only been reading All-New X-Men out of the several storylines that contribute to this collection which probably didn't help, I guess. Maybe this is just what I need to get used to if I want to read more comics?
