We3 is hands-down one of my favorite comics ever. It'll take you about 15 minutes to rad all three issues collected in this volume, as there is very little dialogue. Frank Quitely's art is nothing short of phenomenal, and this is by far Grant's best output in recent years, in my opinion.
The comic is about 3 animals - a cat, a dog, and a rabbit - who are part of a government program to weaponize animals. Science Fiction at it's best here! The animals don't talk like it's a Disney movie, or any nonsense like that (though read my review for Brian K. Vaughan's "Pride" - turns out I'm not opposed to talking animals). This is one of those things where I'll just read it. I thought it was heart-breaking, and amazingly violent.

So Tim (my boyfriend) gave me this to read the other day. He is an avid comic reader, Grant Morrison is his favorite comic writer and he said this is maybe his favorite comic ever.
Now I had never really read any comics before Tim and I got together, a few graphic novels, but that's about it. The few I had ever picked up never really inspired me to read more and I certainly never connected with any of them emotionally in the way that I connect with really good literature.

I honestly had no idea that comics could be like this. We3 rates right up there with some of my favorite books in terms of emotional impact and thought provoking storyline. I actually caught myself tearing up at several points.

If you could recommend one graphic novel to explain why the format works - this should be it. We all are hoping we are a "good dog"
A short (about 30 minutes) but very effective story about the escape of a trio of animals that have been altered and trained for military use. It's emotionally investing (yes, I teared up), and is probably my favourite work by Morrison. What little use of language there is from the trio adds to the story's emotional power. The art suits the tone of the book perfectly. Not for the faint of heart, but well worth the read.
Gorgeous depiction of three stolen pets turned talking killing machines. Very nicely done. Touching!
Heart wrenching and gory action of animals looking for home

I came out of this book with more sentiment and emotional feeling for the story than I ever expected when I went into it. I wasn't all that moved by the point behind the characters or that the whole story was the runaway, with no real background on what the animals were used for beforehand. Also, I thought it was short sighted and limited that the Level Four animal was only another dog.
I wish there was more about what happens after the end up where they end up at the end,.

Sì è vero, in questo fumetto ci sono degli animali che vengono torturati, che soffrono e che muoiono. E allora? Questo non significa né che gli autori sono dei pazzi sadici che godono della sofferenza di creature innocenti né che è un fumetto di merda, come viene detto più o meno direttamente in molte recensioni negative. Uno dei punti di forza di We3 è proprio l’essere in grado di emozionare e di far star male il lettore insieme ai personaggi! Dirò di più, Morrison avrebbe dovuto avere più coraggio e optare per un finale ancora più tragico. In primo luogo perché avrebbe determinato un maggior impatto psicologico sul lettore, il quale a fine lettura invece si sente sollevato e libero di non pensare più alla vicenda; in secondo luogo il finale tutto sommato positivo risulta forzato, in quanto fin dall'inizio non si percepisce alcuna via di scampo per i protagonisti.
Il disegno in sé non mi ha entusiasmato: in alcune occasioni è troppo povero di dettagli, e i volti dei personaggi sembrano gomma gonfiata con delle espressioni disegnate sopra.
Inoltre, la sequenza delle pagine 106-109, aggiunta in questa deluxe edition, è poco comprensibile.
L’ENORME punto di forza di We3 è invece nella ricerca e nella scelta di alcune soluzioni artistiche, specialmente nell'impostazione della pagina. La storia inizia con alcune pagine in cui le vignette sono relativamente piccole, e la “telecamera” stessa si trova all'interno di spazi piccoli: il tutto è poco dopo contrastato da una doppia splash page, che stabilisce anche da subito con la sua violenza quello che sarà il tono del fumetto.
Quasi alla fine del primo capitolo ci sono sei pagine composte esclusivamente da immagini di telecamere di sorveglianza:
Sono pagine pesanti, claustrofobiche, che mi hanno messo a disagio tanto che ho avuto la tentazione di saltarle. E proprio per questo sono perfette nella loro funzione. Portano infatti a una doppia splash page apertissima, in cui mi sono sentito sollevato come se avessi riconquistato la libertà, esattamente come avviene per gli animali protagonisti, finalmente liberi dopo una dura e lunga prigionia.
Anche le scene di combattimento sono realizzate in modo interessante, funzionale allo scopo di rendere l'idea dell'animale che percepisce il tempo e lo spazio in modo diverso dall'uomo.
La pagina si trasforma in uno spazio a tre dimensioni, con alcune vignette poste orizzontalmente e altre verticalmente
We3 è pieno di piccole chicche, come questo balloon riempito non con parole ma con l’oggetto di cui si sta parlando
Mi è piaciuto molto anche che la deluxe edition sia davvero una deluxe edition, arricchita da approfondimenti, estratti di sceneggiatura, racconti degli autori e 11 pagine aggiuntive di storia.
In conclusione We3 non è un fumetto perfetto, ma è in grado di intrattenere, emozionare, far riflettere e insegnare anche qualcosa di tecnica del fumetto. Lo consiglierei a chiunque!
