Surprisingly affecting for such a short story, but that’s probably my age. Homeward Bound, Project X… hit me in the childhood feels as well as the adult ones.

very clever

I tried to read it slow. The idea was vaguely interesting and clearly evil. But the execution was muddied and unbelievable. I didn't buy the language of the animals talking to each other. I didn't care enough to follow the art. There were pieces to like here - the 3 lost pet pages - the "good" scientist whether talking to her bird or trying to save her "friends". There was a way to do this that I would have believed more - you'd have to lose the armor and the missiles. Definitely not my thing. And I'm sure I missed the part of the story in the little panels. Whatever.

So, yeah. Emotionally, this got to me a little. Hence the 5 stars - not perfect or without its flaws, but I really did enjoy every moment of it!

I have been avoiding reading Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's WE3 since college. But, when I asked for recommendations for #31comics31days, it came up, so I decided to finally risk becoming an emotional wreck for a week to read it.

We3 is the story of 3 house pets who have been turned into killing machines meant to replace human soldiers. But the experiments have progressed beyond The dog, cat, and rabbit they initially tested, and Weapon 3 is being decommissioned (read: euthanized). The three animals break out of the facility in their powered suits, led by the dog, who still remembers what "home" felt like and wants to find it.

Without giving anything away, the ending was not nearly as devastating as I was expecting, and I'm glad I read it. The book blurs the line between animal and human (the animals are more human than most of the humans here), and explores compassion and greed within the context of the military industrial complex. The art, too, is gorgeous, and the paneling is stunning. Just maybe don't read this one before bedtime if you're sensitive.

Though short it is very dense. Sci-fi action with a big heart
