A Wynter Fyre by Darynda Jones
5⭐
Started out spicy, then dropped off.... There is so much potential for sex. No P in the V. The plot was really detailed and well developed for a novella.

Of Fate and Fire by Amanda Bouchet
4⭐
cute holiday novella. It was nice to know what happened to Piers.

The King of Hel by Grace Draven
5⭐
Grace Draven is so underappreciated.  Her fantasy world building is beautiful.  I like that she often writes about racism, predjudice, and classism.  This one was a bit melancholy.  I didn't love that her friend had to die for them to be helpful, and we didn't really find it how.  I also can't help but feel if their heir died, their relationship would be in peril again

Familiar Winter Magic by Jeffe Kennedy
2⭐
This novella was tedious. The plot was unique, and I wanted to know what happened, but then it ended on a cliffhanger!  The setup was horrifying.  Familiars are basically slaves for sadistic wizards to rape and drain.  Gross.  The book could benefit from proofreading and trimming. All the school details were pretty boring. The chapter sneak peak about Lord Phel was interesting too, but again excessively detailed without being descriptive.  I basically just wanted to skim everything.

Anthologies are always a mixed bag and this one had some problems. First of all, I did NOT expect the very non-consensual scenes in the first short story. Fortunately, though I don't like them, I also don't find them triggering. If I had, I likely would have given up especially since didn't feel like there was any warning.

And, in the last story, the dialogue during the sex scenes was so nauseating. And the descriptions were very cringe. Also, the whole magic system was built on non-consensual and abusive relationships which is just not something I want to read.

Overall, not for me.

Bought for Darynda’s story A Wynter Fyre, from the start the story drew me in and I loved Wynter and Gareth from the beginning. It’s a paranormal story and keep in mind it is a novella so it’s a quick read and insta love type book. I’d love to have another book about these characters because they were wonderful and the story was well written.

Really enjoyed this collection of stories, though I mainly read it for the Kingmaker Chronicles story and the Darynda Jones story. Loved reading them!

Because it was a little anthology of short stories some where definitely better than others. I enjoyed the first and the last the best. The second was also good, but I didn’t care for the third.
