I was looking for a present for my seven-year-old niece, and this wasn't it.

However, I quite enjoyed the book myself, though it's strange and not entirely clear what the intended audience actually is.

The story is about a family who struggles to make ends meet and it ends up that their children are taken by a rich family that is childless.

It's also about a witch who is given a mission, (eventually), to retrieve those children.

I like the world they're in, that kind of medieval world where there is magic and witches and noblemen and ordinary people with an adventure to be had.  Very European.

I like the characters: the quirks, like the glassblower who makes shapes no one wants to buy, or that people stop at his table to look at his wares but then always buy from his table mate, leaving him almost destitute.  Funny little details that carry the story along.
