I have now reread this and I almost want to drop my rating lower? This was maybe a hate read for me IM SORRY. I just keep seeing references to this series online and I feel left out šŸ˜©

Sarah J. Maas crafts a story that is interesting enough and set up in a way that I always wanted to know what happened next. However I just wish it was told byā€¦ someone else. We all collectively agree that these books are not well written, right? Like from a factual standpoint??? Here are the top things that irritated me while reading:

1. Weird phrases and metaphors. We all know the water bowels from book one but in this book you get ā€œI tried not to bleat like cattleā€ ā€¦ like moo? Was she about to moo?????

2. Repetition. I get itā€™s a long book and there are only so many ways to say things but then maybeā€¦ some things donā€™t need to be said? The word ā€œindeedā€ must have been said 100 times in this book. And Rhys doing feline things. And prick and vulgar gesture. We get it Feyre is ~feisty~

3. The dialogue and relationships. Personally I find it really uncomfortable when in books the character start acting too familiar with each other right off the bat. Whether itā€™s asking invasive questions or Feyre/Nesta bitching people out instantly or cassian/rhys spewing sexual innuendos (or would it not be considered and innuendo if they are blatant and blunt? Like Rhys talking about licking Feyre šŸ¤¢) or even Mor being immediately cheerful and loving towards Feyre. Let these relationships DEVELOP before saying all this crazy shit!!!

4. The horniness!! My god. I will admit Iā€™m not a huge ~spice~ girly but I can dig it if it is meaningful. Like maybe the painty sexy scene could stay. But all the thirsting after each other and gross flirting and the THRONE SCENE (seriously why they needed to do that for ā€˜appearances sakeā€™ is beyond me). And then them having sex like 50 times in a two chapter span. it wasnā€™t necessary to the story. Knock out a few steamy scenes fine but it was like (paraphrasing) ā€œwe had dinner with friends then he fucked me at the table. We took a bath and he fucked me in the bath. We went to bed and fucked 4 times before dawn.ā€ SETTLE DOWN.

5. a lot of the things that people did wrong (how Rhys treated Feyre under the mountain) were explained away in kind of bs ways. Like the author maybe didnā€™t plan the justification before the person did the bad thing. Does that make sense? Who knows I am also not a great writer

6. Feyre is just kind of annoying. And likeā€¦ unremarkable. I found it hard to sympathize for her. And why everyone loves her so much has me like ???

SORRY FOR THE RANT the bottom line: was I entertained? Yes. The plot and the setting was interesting. The characters were fun if a bit unrealistic. I did find it hard to follow at times but that could be me just not giving it my full attention or not remembering details well.

BUT I do understand the memes now so for that, I am grateful. We do it for the FOMO šŸ™‡ā€ā™€ļø

Edit: the rating of the book is not based on the quality of the book, but on how much I enjoyed reading it. I am VERY aware about the quality of this book/author

This book was phenomenal. From the character arcs to plunging plot twists, this book was nothing less than a roller coaster of emotions. Firstly, I personally enjoyed Feyreā€™s character development and healing a lot more in this book than the second. Second of all, this is not a romance, primarily(at least in my opinion). This is a political fantasy (a very well-done one too), with wars betrayals, politics of relations between Courts and division between them, everything was full of action and drama. I will say I have predicted quite a lot of the plot, yet it was still very enjoyable and exciting! This was a great build-off from the previous book, and I canā€™t wait to see how the author evolves the story in the next one!

After the first book, I didnā€™t know if Iā€™d finish the series. I figured Iā€™d try to read the second and see how it went, and I am so glad I did. This book was truly beautiful. I loved the redemption of Rhys, and I loved seeing Tamlin as more of a villain. Rhysā€™ court is amazing and truly felt like a family especially with the addition of Feyre. Towards the end I was OBSESSED and could not wait to read/finish the book, and now that itā€™s over I canā€™t wait to pick up the next book!

TW: SA, DV, violence, death of family

The TENSION was so good and so painful. It made me want to keep reading, just hoping I could get another sweet moment/point of reflection. A few really good twists in this book. A few really predictable twists. It felt really different from ACOTAR in all of the best ways. Overall, I felt a lot reading this book and it has unfortunately turned me into a fan of fantasy.

The rumors were true, the second book is SO much better in this series after you get through the first. The side characters and found family theme throughout this story were endearing and heartbreaking. I love Rhys and how he stands for what he believes in and protects who he cares about. Cassian was the funniest and most relatable side character I've read in a while, Az's humble darkness is enchanting, and I want to be Mor's friend. The only person I had a struggle connecting with at times was (surprise), Feyre. I found her character arc and development for this story to be a great representation of how healing is not linear after trauma, and showed a realistic perspective on PTSD. What I didn't like was her continued immaturity at random plot points that didn't match up with her words or actions
when she found out Rhys was her mate, for example. She just ran and hid from him moments after she killed people for the first time since Under the Mountain to save him and she's mad he didn't tell her?? I didn't get it, with her history I agreed with Rhys she needed to figure out her feelings on her own.
I absolutely adore Feyre's sisters and the bond the three of them have, I also ship Cassian and Nesta immensely. This book had me throwing my book at times in shock, audibly yelping at some action scenes, and gasping at the romance. The slowest burn that came together beautifully. 10/10 recommend and already wish I could read for the first time again.
