A great modern take on a historical setting. If this book was really realized in the 1820's, it may have been an instant best seller for all the scandal that Frannie Langton reveals about the family, the least shocking of which is all the drug use. This book is a real page turner. The opening in Jamaica combines science, witch-craft, and evil doctors with a wall of skulls. The female love affair, the dominamatrix, and the reveal of who was behind the murder were all parts of the exciting twists and turns of the novel.

Dark, thoughtful, snapshot of Britain's relationship to slavery wrapped in an "onion" mystery of what really happened leading up to the double murder.
