Getting better more action in this book but still the sex scenes can be a little shorter... haha only complaint.

Also Alexei and Sean! Can’t wait to see what they have in store!

Remember when I reposted the review of In the Wreckage and said it was because I was gonna reread the rest of the series (which I hadn't reviewed yet) and post the reviews within the next month or so? Yeah, that plan crashed and burned. Like a lot of my plans do.

But, I'm still rereading the series (and discovering so many things I missed the last time). I will just be doing it a little slower than I initially wanted to. I think. Trying not to make plans this time.

This is the second book in the Metahuman Files series and again follows Jamie, Kyle and the rest of Alpha team. In book 1, we found out that a bunch of criminal organizations seem to be working together to open and operate Splice chemical labs. They're experimenting on kidnapped people to find out what aspects of an individual's biology turned them into metahumans on coming in contact with Splice, rather than just killing them, which is a fate most people exposed to Splice suffer. Alpha team, who are very familiar with the horrors of Splice, are working to find out exactly who's behind these labs and how they can be stopped.

In this book, there's another mission, one related to the Splice labs, that has them working undercover in London. They need to make contact with the person who is funding the labs, which will bring them one step closer to shutting the whole thing down.

It's a really good plot, but a little convoluted. The first time I read the book, for example, I found myself slightly overwhelmed with the information that was being given and I missed a lot of things. The author is still establishing the world and it's politics, as well as the important players. And between that and the mission and all the action it entails, it becomes a tad too much. But that's my only issue with the book.

I love this world that Hailey Turner has created. I love her characters, I love the overall plot about Splice labs and criminal organisations, and I love the romantic subplot. Jamie and Kyle have amazing chemistry and where the first book was heavier on the sex than I would have liked, this one takes it down a notch and gives us more about their feelings.

Also, I love the camaraderie between the team. Whether they're on a mission or just sitting on couches, there's fun banter to be had, especially between Kyle and Alexei, Kyle's brother. Alexei is one of my favourites, in fact, with his disgruntled Russian routine that adds much needed levity to an otherwise serious book. I'm excited to reread the next book, which has more of a focus on him and a new character who was introduced in this book.

Overall, a great installment to a series that's still kind of finding its sea legs. This is such a good series and I highly recommend it.

6/22/2021 - Note: At the time of this review, it looks like all of Hailey Turner’s audios are included in Audible’s big sale.

In the Ruins is the second book of Hailey Turner’s Metahuman Files series. Events in this book build on those from the first and while a complete story, there are ongoing story arcs so you’ll definitely want to listen to them all & in order. As such, there may be spoilers to book 1 in my review.

Again, Turner has a fantastic mix of action, suspense, political, thriller, and romance. She does a wonderful job of balancing all the characters’ back stories while still moving forward with an engaging and exciting story. Jamie & Kyle are on solid ground, both in their careers and in their, albeit somewhat secret, relationship. An undercover assignment gives them a chance to be out in the open – but with pretending to be other people it’s not a freeing as it seems.

We get to know individual team members even better and we’re introduced to some new characters as well. There’s more writing from other’s perspectives and it’s great insight. Jamie’s family plays a bigger role in this story and I enjoyed how Turner explored that dynamic.

While I liked that the first two books have centered Jamie & Kyle’s relationship – I’m definitely looking forward to the fact that book 3, In the Shadows, will feature Alexi & Sean.

Narration:
Greg Boudreaux continues to be a great narrator for this series. Characters are consistent from book to book – and he has the added difficulty of accents and mannerisms for when the group is undercover.

4 Stars!

I’m just here to tell you (amongst the many other reviews singing this series’ praises) that this is seriously good stuff.

This is military romantic suspense with plenty of kick assery and a full supporting cast that is starting to bloom quite nicely. Add a scifi bent towards a futuristic dystopic AU at the mercy of chemical terrorism, and this is the perfect mix of several genres that I love to indulge in!

Turner is slowly gaining impressive points. This second installment sets up the rest of the series, as she puts into play a story arc that will be long and complex. I’m already invested in seeing how this pans out with the very high risks, and even higher stakes, that this Metahuman team will most likely face as they lay everything on the line (especially Jamie and Kyle) to basically, save the world.

Overall, this has it all. Drama, action, feels, intensity, and some very good romance. The sex may be a tad bit gratuitous but it’s hot and explicit gratuitous-ness. For sure, Jaime, Kyle, and company will have many challenges and obstacles ahead of them, and I look forward to the nail biting situations as Turner will no doubt put them through their paces!

Even better than the first

My main complaint about book one, hot as it was, was that the information overload at the beginning made it a bit hard to get into (though hot and action-filled once I did). This second installment was easier to follow - partly because I was already familiar with names and world setting - so I was more able to enjoy the story without ever feeling lost.

I grew up reading a lot of Alistair MacLean books, like The Guns of Navarone, and these books remind me of those a bit, though way, WAY hotter. The action is intense and not predictable. The chemistry between Jamie and Kyle continues to be off-the-charts sizzling (there was one scene involving a toy that is definitely worth a reread). And I was excited to see more of Alexei and meet Sean. On to book three!

I loved these first two books - it’s a futuristic story where some people have been subjected to chemical bombs and have developed superpowers. However, they’re not well accepted by society, we follow some Marines, Special Agents, who have been recruited by the MDF (in charge of the Metahumans - the only way to work for the government).

Jamie is the chief of the Alpha Team and has to deal with two new “normal” teammates to fill the sniper post. However, he would have never guessed that his new sniper is the amazing and wrecking man he met the previous night. Kyle and his brother Alexei are against their wishes the recruits of the Alpha Team. Between conspiracy, terrorist attacks and revelations - lot of things can happen.

Lots of action, sexual tension - a series full of hot men, fierce women, and superpowers - a really great combo !!
Now I know that there will be a focus on Alexei and I’m excited about it
