One of the best books on the advent of railways and the steam engine - perhaps the only thing that one can complain about this book is the fact that, being a tie-in to a BBC show, it assumes that you actually watched the show. I'm not sure, therefore, how redundant it is with the show, and I feel that there are a few bits missing here and there - especially when it comes to the cast of the show that is mentioned quite often about doing things (that we cannot see, at most in a picture that feels taken out of context).

However, the book has an amazing level of detail and interesting detail at that. I found out a lot of new things about the advent of railways, and putting things through multiple perspectives and lenses shows quite well how the railways influenced the social, cultural and industrial development of Britain.

I've watched the show and enjoyed it enough to buy the book. I've liked all the "Farm" series books & shows and like those other books this is written in parts by all 3 presenters. Unlike those other ones this gave far more info about the situation and less about the Peter, Alex & Ruth's reactions to it. I found this book much more informative about the changes railways brought about in society than the 'farm' books were about wider society. Excellent read. Recommend both the show and the book
