I was excited for this book but I found it boring. I didn’t connect to any of the characters and it just felt uneventful. Not sure if i’ll read the sequel. Sad as I love tournament tropes.

A really interesting twisted magical version of the Hunger Games.

If you take the Hunger Games, add magic, and make it so you’re not sure who to root for, you’ve got this book.

This was a fun twist on the sub-genre and kept you on your toes as you aren’t sure who is right and wrong and who is good or bad. Those you think are evil might not be and those who are good might not be either. The twisting alliances and shades of gray in everyone’s motivation and personalities was interesting.

I did feel like things slowed down in the middle and the beginning took a minute to get rolling but the end had me hooked and sets up an absolute disaster for our characters to face in the sequel.

I see the intent the authors had!!! I would actually give this book 3.5 stars as the premise and plot and characters were definitely interesting. I sometimes struggled with the writing and found the plot pacing to be slow at times but when this book picked up the pace, I needed to know the ending!

“do not judge the champions too harshly. survival could make villains of any of us.”

if the hunger games, the maze runner, and harry potter had a baby…but also set in the world of gossip girl and everyone is evil (sort of—that’s the whole point of this story: are some people truly destined to be evil? or can they change their fate and everything that’s been destined for them? what about the heroes—who decides they get that label when everyone is only trying to survive? or maybe it’s deeper than that…)
