Sense and Sensibility

Jane Austen

This was fine… didn’t like it as much as pride and prejudice. I knew this coming into reading this, but the writing is just difficult to me. I like to read fast and yeah that’s definitely hard to do with Austen. This was short and definitely bingeable but because of the writing, I could only do like 100 pages at a time.

Really enjoyed reading about women though! It was odd cause Elinor seems like the main character but her story really only started at the beginning and the end. Excited to watch the movie/series though!

So incredibly funny, and Elizabeth Klett's narration is so sparkling. Its interesting to see the parallels between this and Pride and Prejudice, which I'm more familiar with. I was genuinely in suspense for huge parts of the novel, and gasped out loud several times. Elinor's anxiety and tightly wound nature was a delightful contrast to everyone else around her, and wow I so often felt sorry for her and her lack of support. Austen is brilliant, sharp, funny, rich and delightful.

i did really like sense and sensibility but i liked it less than persuasion, pride and prejudice, and emma. in fact, dare i say, i preferred knightley and emma’s weird age situation to colonel brandon and marianne’s weird age situation. i didn’t love that the end of the book was basically “WELL… everyone agreed that marianne should go marry colonel brandon as his reward for being a good dude… so she did!” i was surprisingly pretty satisfied with the edward situation which i didn’t think i was going to be based on the bbc miniseries. also based on that series i thought margaret was more involved in the family. she kind of is just there sometimes. sorry meg. i also felt this was a slow read for me and i struggled to concentrate at times. all in all, though, another austen banger!!
