Reread: 4/10/20

So many good moments and reveals in this book, easily my second favourite of the series.

This started out really slow for me. It picked up maybe half way in and I came to love the queen (not saying which one) but hooray for more bad ass women in this one compared to the first. I had read reviews that this one was so much better than the first but they're about equal for me. My biggest drawback was probably the switch to third person. I guess it made sense since there's a lot going on, but I hate third person almost always. Still looking forward to the next books, though and happy that the third is sitting on my shelf waiting.

The first book, The Thief, was good but didn’t hold my attention until the end. I had heard such high praise that I forced myself to finish it. The twist at the end changed literally everything and the best part is The Queen of Atollia took the very best of the first book and raised it to another level. It was EXCELLENT. I promise you, it’s worth finishing the first book so you can experience this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

O HOLY GODS, THANK YOU FOR THIS PRECIOUS GIFT

I AM WHOLLY DEDICATED TO YOUR WISDOM AND TRUTH

I ONCE ALMOST BROKE MY ANKLE TO SHARE YOUR HOLY WORDS

bless you. bless you all. this book is a blessing to the world. may it shine upon your hearts and minds and warm them with its true peace and love

bless us, o gods. bless us, o queens.

amen

(5 stars in 2011, 4 stars in 2016. Still a total favorite, but either I have become more stringent in my ratings or I have become heartless in my old age.)

I didn't get it.

Separate plot points, all part of different plots, and no string to tie them together.

Some of the characters were amazing and others lacked development. Especially the Queen of Attolia; the author spent a lot of time on exposition about her character, but she was very two-dimensional. At times, I thought her character was improving, but then she reverted back to her old self. The most surprising part of her being a mystery to the reader is that half of the story was told from her third-person perspective!

As for the second half of the book... there is a difference between the solution to a mystery and a random plot point which came out of nowhere!

But, of course, Eugenides is still a good character, and I will finish the series. I like the world.

I just didn't get this book.

DNF at 72%. Got to the “plot twist” and quit. Friends, in case it needs to be said for the millionth time, you can’t love someone you’ve never had a conversation with.

Stalking, leaving gifts, and spying on them isn’t love. Add in a 10+ year age difference, body mutilation, and torture, and I’m noping out of the story. Sorry, too old to waste my time.

Oh for the love of god... how long after reading this do I discover on the cover she is actually holding a hook?

All this time I only briefly glanced at it and was likening it to an ahem pump of some sort. You'll know what I'm talking about if you've seen Austin Powers.

Anyway, did I once even question why said pump was on the cover of this book?

No.

Why? My best guess is that the book was just too darn good for me to care!

An enjoyable read. I got a little bogged down in all the political machinations and a lot of talk about armies and such. I tended to skim those parts a little more than I should.

The book starts with a nice piece of action. . .and some rather devastating results to the hero. The rest of the book is -mostly- about him learning to cope, and pulling himself together again, while the countries prepare to go to war with each other.

I did find the ending a little. . .twisted. For a romance its. . .probably one of the odder ones I have ever read. Though I can see how it stretches back even to the first book, its definitely a little strange.

Still, an interesting read and I'm curious to see what happens.

This one was hard, so this is only the second time I've read it all the way through. I have re-read the really good part where Attolia puts the Mede ambassodor in his place many times.

On to the next book before #6 comes out next week.
