4.15 AVERAGE

I was meh about the first book, but I really loved this sequel. The characters and intrigues came to life for me, and the ending surprised me pleasantly.

Good guys, bad guys, it's all relative and the characters are so motivated by politics they are almost not responsible for their bad behavior. This book makes strategy seem interesting!

Second reading in preparation for the new book. Either due to my increased age or Game of Thrones culture, politics and strategy are normalized and this book is still wonderful.

4.5

-1 star for the character POV jumping around every paragraph or so. This in addition to being written in 3rd person omniscient made it difficult to connect to the characters and to the story at places.

This book ended exactly the way I wanted it to but it definitely made me nervous the whole way through! And it never bodes well when your favorite characters are happy at the end of book two of a six book series.

I went more than half way through this book really hoping for some action again. There was a LOT of detail on the battle and such, but really it only got somewhat interesting at the very beginning and then toward the very end. Again, I liked the story now that I’m done the book, but the process was so slow and painful.

5 stars!

For the holidays, I gifted myself a reread of this fantastic book and I had such a lovely time. This was probably my 4th or 5th read of this book, one of my favorites (because I really can't choose a favorite) in my favorite series.

It's hard to attempt a review of this book because you really just have to go out and read it to appreciate it fully. But, some things that you can look forward to:
- a brilliant, lovable, though sometimes whiny thief-hero
- a beautiful queen who is not as ruthless as her reputation
- clever (and not-so-clever) political schemes
- gods meddling in human affairs
- a dash or two of romance

cw: war, casualties, torture (briefly discussed), loss of limbs, poison, assassination, strangulation, mentions of suicide, mentions of death
adventurous inspiring mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix

I’d almost forgotten I was reading this & then it reappeared. The beginning is truly shocking and then… well, it’s a completely different book from The Thief. Never mind that Eugenides is still the protagonist, in this book we get to know him in an entirely different way. He still managed to surprise me and once I actually laughed aloud. I love how Turner allowed Gen to grow & change. When I finished this, I immediately picked up the third. Doubt I’ll forget I’m reading that one!

Turner certainly enjoys intrigue. Although I don't get as much character depth as I expected, the story is still unique and compelling.
