There's so much potential here for good storytelling and adventure, only to have a romance come out of nowhere and force its way front and center. I still love the characters, but I think I'll be approaching the next book with caution.

I could not put it down. I enjoyed every page, and couldn't turn them fast enough.

This was amazing.

Eugenides complex character is brilliantly written, as is the rest of the cast, but his choices aren't always predictable and the latter half of the book took unexpected paths.

Interesting characters and plenty of intrigue. Loved it!

Why have I left these books on the shelf for so long! Highly recommended.

Although I enjoyed "The Thief" better i did enjoy this sequel. Gen is a very fun character to follow and i feel like this book was missing his spunk due to the nature of the plot. This is definetly a sequel that's more about setting up plot/events vs character driven or world building. With that being said, I am very excited to keep going with this series!

too much politics/talking.

Another gripping tale, complete with complex characters and clever twists despite its short length.

This story leans firmly into politics and character exploration than its predecessor. It was certainly enjoyable, but I did personally miss The Thief's stronger emphasis on fantasy elements of the world and narrative.

Better than the first book in this series, but still not what it.could be. The tactical war talk loses me often and I don't understand the "love story" going on toward the end.

It took awhile to get into this one, with all the political machinations and perspective switches. The plot moves along at a good clip, but for quite some chapters I couldn't see the big picture - what was the driving conflict of THIS book, why this segment in the battles between these countries - until I adjusted my expectations. It's not about conflict between kingdoms, but building and resolving conflict between people.
I love a good hearted rascal; I love even more a woman playing the long game, making the best of hard choices.
On to the next audiobook! I wonder how Gen will change next, or will the narrative focal point shift?
