This book ages so well. I still love it to the death and all the characters, too. The plot is so exciting, with many twists and turns. I love the highly political turn this series has taken. And I know that it will only get better. Also, a romance that is not cheesy and totally believable. I'm winning!!
I found the shift to 3rd person when the first book was told in 1st jarring and not a change that I enjoyed. I did like the expansion of the world-building and liked learning more about Eddis and Attolia. The character interactions were all done well and everything about this series is so life-like and vivid.

I had seen a lot of people saying that this book was much better, more compelling, more exciting, etc. than The Thief, but personally I enjoyed them about the same amount. In some ways I liked the smaller, tighter story of The Thief a little better, but I did like having more women around in this one. There were lots of big political moves on a grand scale that took place kind of at a remove. There were some big declared emotions that felt similarly removed to me. All in all it was a very solid and enjoyable story, but not as strong for me as it was for others.

WOW! And I thought the first installment in the series was delightful enough!
I can not emphasize it enough how utterly enthralled I am with Turner’s intentional writing. Every scene, every paragraph, every line is significant & diligently placed. I kept re-reading paragraphs picking up on the plethora of subtle information always further explicating the characters, cities, politics & history. It’s a rare pleasure to come across writing this meticulous.
I absolutely loved the omniscient narration that allowed us a greater insight not just into a wider range of characters, but into the flaws & vulnerability of the thief himself. While in the previous book he writes his story in his own words, boastful & unreliable in his narration, in this one we see him changing through love & pain & we’re reminded that he’s still a boy. Often frightened & in over his head. Attolia was another character handled with remarkable care. A complex antagonist I found myself sympathizing with despite the earlier events of the book.
Now the romance was an unexpected surprise. On the one had, I can’t believe Turner pulls it off! The young enemy thief enchanted by the foreign resilient and lonely princess read like a sort of mystical myth. I liked that Attolia’s character stays consistent after realizing her feelings, & doesn’t lose agency or power at any point. On the other hand, my boy is still maimed and frightened to an extent, & while I appreciated that Gen realizes what happened to him was largely a consequence of his sly undertakings, i still definitely need to read on before solidifying an opinion on this one.
All in all, new favorite series alert!

Absolutely worth the read but slow until halfway through, so slow I wasn’t sure I could last.
I’m honestly not sure why people say this series is written for children.
