Another read for my Empire and it's Fictions course.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST BORING, SLOW, UNNECESSARILY LONG WINDED BOOK I HAVE EVER READ.

They literally kill Dracula at the LAST SECOND and spend SO LONG hunting AHHHHH.

The only character that has rights is Minna, with John coming at a second and that's probably because he is Minna's husband (I also liked Lucy).

Abraham and his monologues I can't JUST GET TO THE POINT.

While it's interesting knowing one of the original stories of vampires, to know the original Dracula story, and to see how they've changed and kept some similarities from them in popular culture today, I literally would not recommend anyone reads this book.

Interested to see it's relation to empire, so let's hope this boring book can produce some interesting analysis for my essay 🤣🤣🤣

It was beautifully written and to be honest, I loved every bit of it. I did not give it a full five stars because of the frequent misogyny and sexism but it is a victorian book, an exceptional one but still a product of its time.

At times it was very very bleak and I really didn't wanted to continue it. However, as I read more of it I became more invested in the story and I cared about some of the characters which also made me enjoy the story more. Still I really didn't like the ending, it felt super rushed and I felt like even Bram Stoker himself was like "Let's finish this I'm bored".

It was like boom Dracula dies boom Quiencey also died, boom years have passed and Jonathan and Mina have a boy called Quincey now. The End.

After all that epic build up I would've wanted a lot more pay off. Also this was definitely of its time with all the racial stereotyping and gender roles.

Dracula is told from the diary entries of the different characters throughout the story, and it was so refreshing to get different point of views, especially because I liked all the characters. Normally in classics it's told from one point of view, which can become quite monotonous, so it really helped the pace of the story. However, the book had slow pacing, especially at the beginning, but once I passed the 150 page mark the story really developed, and it became exciting and thrilling. 

I loved all the different gothic/horror elements Dracula included, as I was only expecting the vampire element. There was asylums with mentally ill people, hypnosis, sleepwalking, missing children, cemeteries, breaking into graves, castles and of course Vampires. 

I liked all the characters, and the relationships that grew between them, especially Mina and Lucy, Van Helsing and John Seward, and Van Helsing and Mina. Mina is so smart and cute and Van Helsing and Seward were all my favourite characters. Jonathan Harker's journals at the beginning were so funny and fun to read, and I like how they were the foundation for the rest of the story. It's so cute how they all read each other's diaries, and I liked how they all became a sort of found family in the second half of the book.

Overall, it was a good book, and I would recommend to anyone who is up for a 400 page classic, and who likes Vampires and books with a gothic setting.
