'Milo's World Book One: The Land Under the Lake' written by Richard Marazano with art by Christophe Ferreira is a magical graphic novel about a young boy and a goldfish. And maybe a few things more.

Milo lives on his own. His mother is gone, and his dad works a lot away from home. Milo is looked after by his three eccentric aunts who bring him more food than he can possibly eat, but he is mostly left on his own. One day, in the local river, Milo finds a strange goldfish. He feeds it and it starts getting bigger. He also starts getting strange visitors asking about the weirdly large fish.

The art style looks just like the cover. It's kind of a painted animation style and I really liked it. I liked the story and the odd characters. This would be a fun read for younger readers.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Lion Forge, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Wow! This is really, really cool, I adore the art and the story is not quite as excellent, but pretty darn good. I will definitely look for the second book!

Puro Miyazaki.

A beautiful world that is reminiscent of Miyazaki's brilliance. Whether it was the color pallet, the fantastical landscapes, or seemingly in consequential characters overcoming their own fears to fight evil; you'll leave wanting more.

Intéressant mais pas transcendant. Cette fin mérite quand même qu'on lise la suite...

This lovely graphic novel was written and drawn by two artists who have deep roots in anime and manga, and it shines clearly through. Milo is more or less raising himself, with his mother dead, his father working most of the time out of town. But he has his three eccentric aunties checking in on him daily and stuffing him full of good cooking. One day, while fishing in the lake behind his house for supper, he finds a glowing golden egg which, by the next day, hatches into a rapidly growing (and glowing) goldfish. Then a strange cast of characters moves into his life in various ways, and soon Milo is off on the adventure of a lifetime, where some secrets of his past may be answered. Lovely art, lovely story!

I enjoyed this adventurous fantasy graphic novel. It very much reminded me of Amulet, so I think similar readers will enjoy it. There is nothing super unique in it, but the art is beautiful and the story keeps moving so I am interested to see what happens next (esp. because the story seems to come to a pretty closed point).

The problem is, the narrative progresses most of the time because of Milo's stupidity. There are panels and panels wasted on him striking a pose to whine about one thing or another. I honestly started to hope the frog man would make good on his threat and eat Milo.

3,5/5. This is the kind of book that even if I didn’t enjoy it that much, I see and recognize the potential. I think that a younger audience would like it more. For personal preference, the art wasn’t for me and the story too slow, not epic enough. That being said it has decent artwork if you like the style and the humor/action/storyline is good enough to make it worth it, again probably more for young reader and that is the targeted age for this book so can’t blame them for not liking it much has an adult. Personal liking 2,5/5 potential 4/5. I’ll go with a 3,5/5 round up to four, seem more fair that way!
