1/3/24 » Wuthering Heights grew on me with time. I’m surprised with myself, too. But every time I look back on Wuthering Heights, all I think about is I don’t want to be like these people. I don’t want to turn out like Heathcliff.

This is one of a few novels that perfectly captured the darkest side of human nature, how cruel human beings can be for the stupidest reasons (I’m a realist and I believe people can do silly things that hurt each other out of spite), and how love can be fatally selfish and destructive when you allow your ego become bigger than your heart. The things these characters do are so ludicrous that it only makes this book rather smart because it doesn’t ask for the redemption of these characters.

What’s so good about holding onto revenge and hatred that ruin you within? Hatred only makes your life shorter and drags others along with you to hell. I’ve seen a few people in my life like Heathcliff, who carry their grudge in their hearts forever rather than moving on and their entire existence eventually becomes that grudge itself. They suck everyone around them into their pitch-black negativity with their souls wrinkled like dried leaves. I’m afraid I’ll grow up like them and die with regrets realizing I wasted my entire life focusing on nonsensical hatred.

At first, I didn’t understand why most characters in this book seem to be always dying. Then, I learned people from that era could easily die from a normal cold and TB. It’s been stated some of them didn’t even live older than 30, including Emily Brontë. Honestly, the more I read negative reviews, the more I realize I love this book for the same reasons people hate about. The narrative structure of this book is unique. The haunting effect this book had on me is immense, and I think it changed my life for the better.

The writing is dense, full of imagery and tangled emotions. All the characters are wretched with revenge and I found it hard to read as the mood is dark and depressing, fitting for the moors in winter.  There is beauty, but I struggled to find it in the depths of terrible emotion and  alsmot constant sorrows. Admittedly, I almost gave up, I was pulled back to find out the ending.
