This is a sweet story about a character I love from The Kingkiller Chronicles. It's a very odd and unusual story about an odd an unusual girl, but it's also tender and thoughtful.

I wouldn't recommend reading this book without having read the books in The Kingkiller Chronicles that are out, you'd be lost and confused and have no idea who Auri is or what's going on. But if you read those books and liked Auri, this book is for you.

I loved this. I listened to the audiobook while working my through The Wise Man's Fear. Auri's story is unusual but so whimsical and magical. I couldn't help but feel my fondness for her grow.

I don't know how to rate this book. It was good.

It was strange. There is very little action in the story. The character development is there, but oblique. It is very confined in scope, and the outcome is satisfying, but not wholly surprising. As the author himself states, it's not for everyone, and I'm not certain that I was quite the one whom he wrote it for. I felt things for inanimate objects.

It was good. The word choice, as well as the way the sentences and paragraphs fit together, were superb. I am thinking about getting the audiobook simply because I want to hear it read again in the author's voice. It is a wordsmith's mastercraft that mined the English language and assembled this array of gems in front of my eyes. I came to know this waif of a girl. who knows things that are still yet unknown. She sees life differently than I do, and yet I was able to - in glimpses - see inside her head and understand the world as she did. It made me question the layout of my living room. I appreciate that about this book. I believe this is the only book that has evoked that thought in me, and weighed upon my mind for hours afterwards. Lyrically, the ride was strange yet very satisfying in its rhythm, its peaks and valleys. There are phrases that I want to quote, again and again, from it.

In the end, all I can say is to read Rothfuss' other work first, and if you are left wanting more, this is the perfect way to satisfy that craving. If you revel in words perfectly arranged, in a story that is a bit strange, by all means read this book. If you are wanting a simple story, with perfect happy people who see life as "normal" people do, then stay away. This is for those who see life a little bit off center.

Three stars... Lots of indecision here. I think a re-read would make me like it more. The problem with this book is how frustrating Auri is for me as a main character. She is good within the story but carrying the narrative isn't great.

The story is fundamentally full of things happening even if most of that is moving things around, but it's hard to be truly 'in' the piece since we don't really get much to connect everything. Listening to podcasts and reading around it I can see there's a lot to pull out of it if you're a Kingkiller fan.

The writing is great but then Rothfuss *is* a great writer. I just wish the story pulled you in a lot more. By contrast, the shorter Bast story - The Lightning Tree - in the Rogues anthology is everything you could want from a Kingkiller short.

This book is all about the descriptions of little things and covers a few days with the unique style of Rothfuss.

I am not a fan of books where nothing happens and I read this expecting not to like it at all. My review is essentially 'I liked it better than I expected, not a lot, but better than I expected'. It is definitely very beautifully written. If you love descriptive, picture painting writing, then you will really love this book.

Quirky and inspired. Patrick Rothfuss is probably my favourite author at the moment.

Wow. I was pleasantly surprised by this story of Auri. It made me feel a little like I do when I read certain Gaiman books. This is a story I will probably be thinking about for a while.
