One of my dad's favorite authors, I picked up a copy for him and read it also. Told as snapshots of his life every 1o years, a novel, fast approach which if I recollect correctly he used because he needed some quick cash. Includes his experiences in South Africa under apartheid. Monsarrat had an interesting life, not a normal writer's one, if there is such a thing. Read or watch [book:The Cruel Sea|183586] for a feeling of his wartime experiences.
