it's was a pleasant read and engaging (mostly thanks to amazing Amazon audiobook narration, it was legendary job by Kate Reinders)
story has so much potential and different sides, from ordinary human interactions to political drama to love story, I wished some part of political aspect to be more but it was a fast and awesome read so I don't complain more
two things I loved about this book, one that being the narration I already said, the other one is the characters, they are well crafted and you can understand everyone of them, they are not some distant special kind of people, they are all ordinary people, psychopath or gentle hearted, they are are believable.
waiting on the second volume, I think the writer can take unexpected turns as she did a few of them in 1st book

Right on! I haven’t read a dystopian book in a while that really grabbed me so I was really excited to see this one was a mix of some of my faves: Hunger Games, The Testing and Legend. I loved the concept, the twists, all the characters and Roselle, who is such a badass!!! I’ll be starting book 2 now! I did this as an audiobook for my first one ever and so it dragged for me that way. I could have read it in a quarter of the time so I’m excited to read book 2 on my own.
3.5 stars. It took me a while to get into this book. I liked all the characters but I feel like it just took a while to get to the actual plot of the book. I understand it's a world and it needed to be developed but it just felt like some unnecessary development at times and other times I'm like wait, what? I will read the second one though because I like the premise.
adventurous
dark

This book was a bit hit and miss.
I liked the premise and the world building. Although, Bartol does not explain the reasoning behind the treatment of secondborns.
I did like Roselle as a character, most of the time. It's a shame to see Bartol use her own character to push through unnecessary parts of the plot, such as the romance aspect of the plot. The insta-love ruined what could have been a really good slow burn romance. There is one really bizarrely written romance scene in this book.
Hawthorne began as an interesting character but very quickly became bland with no personality.
Due to the actual plot surrounding Roselle being really interesting, I will likely read the sequel.

A stunning introduction
This book had me from the start. Magnificently written, with a cast of characters you will love I am sure , as much as the author. Thank you for an unforgettable read that I am sure to read many times. I am hanging by a thread for the next installment!

Worth sitting down for
This book is great. The pacing with very nice. Instead of dragging out the story of slips a year farther in to it. Most definitely getting the next book asap.

Meh
This novel started out well, but didn't go anywhere. I found myself losing interest. I felt like the society as a whole was confusing. How does a society where only a firstborn can reproduce even sustain itself? No historical background is given, so it's hard to understand the motivations behind the culture presented in the book.

Confusing
I enjoyed the main character, however, the story felt very confusing and out of order. The relationships were not believable and I just didn’t like any of the love interests. I feel like the world building was not substantial enough for me to understand all of the nuances in what was happening.
