THIS IS AN AMAZING BOOK. I started reading this book on my phone as a way to pass time and god it is super amazing. There is a lot of action and a lot of Romance which I love. I would've fell off of a cliff at the end of this book. The ending is such a cliffhanger and now I need the second book.
Even though there is a "good" side and a "bad" side, I feel like as a reader, it is difficult to determine which side to like, and even though there are "bad" characters, I find myself still liking those characters. Minus Roselle's family. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed the author's writing style, it kept me engaged in the book and wasn't boring.

Interesting concept, not the best execution.
I feel like the plot was rushed, the descriptions were missing crucial elements to help me visualize the space, and the characters weren't fleshed out enough. I was never an insta-love fan so Hawthorne and Roselle wasn't something I could get into. I actually wished the found family aspect would have been expanded more, I felt like it had so much potential. I also wish Roselle was more assertive, at times it felt like she just flowed along with what other people were doing.
I don't think I'll be finishing the series.

I'm not a big fan of YA dystopian novels or stories, so maybe I'm not the best person to be reviewing this. But I did pick this up as my Kindle First novel for July, and it sounded interesting, so I wanted to give it a chance, because it is such a popular genre. Unfortunately, I ended up DNF'ing it at 20%.
I don't like giving bad reviews, as I know how tough it is to write a book and get it out there, but try as I may, I couldn't get into the story, or the characters. I also got confused at about 15%, with all the new characters coming and going and kept having to flip back a few pages to figure out who was who. I was afraid that it would be cliché and just another ripoff of the Hunger Games / Divergent (similar plot, settings, character stereotypes) series, and as I read some of these other reviews, it seems that's the case.
An extra star because the writing is well-done and the beginning was very, very interesting. The worldbuilding was also done well, at least as far as I got. I really wanted to like this one, and I'm afraid I won't be reading the rest of the books in this trilogy.

I was so excited for this book to come out... but it fell way short of my expectations.
The main character, Roselle, how was I supposed to like her? I blame the narration.
The storyline was all over the place and in my opinion didn't give the reader time to fall in love or care about any of the characters in the book.

This book read like a first or second draft. I can see the potential but it was completely disjointed and had that sour-unfinished-book taste.
The MC Roselle showed great promise of being a strong character, however it was lost in the weeds. Here are the things that should've been fixed.
- Over the nose imagery and references to Rose.
- Every guy in her age group was in love with her!
- She seems to have a dual personality. She's timid and shy and whiplash! She's totally sure of herself and knows how to play political games. What even?
- The firstborn/secondborn society is *almost* believable, considering how the aristocracy worked in most of our history. However the disdain towards the secondborn was very perplexing. If a society doesn't want to have secondborn then why does the society require a second born?
- There's a significant obsession with appearances. And weirdly enough, by Roselle, in addition to others. The haircut thing was odd as was the leg shaving thing. It all read a bit Panem-Capitol-esque.
- Gabriel seemed very flat and one dimensional for a character. He supposedly likes/loves his sister but it doesn't show in any of his actions.
- It was a very strong - tell not show - type of book.
- Agent Crow seemed to be an interesting character, yet not enough background was given on him.
- No details on how the society developed into the current structure. No show of how the population was maintained. No explanation of fates.
In the end, I liked the idea but it seemed that the book never progressed past it into actual fulfillment stage.

Spoiler
The rose garden society might've been ok if she hadn't started calling Clifton her gardener. It was supposed to be a secret for fuck's sake!- Every guy in her age group was in love with her!
Spoiler
I can understand Hawthorne, who seems to oscillate between a Peeta and a Gale. But Clifton and the Winterstorm guy too? Granted the whole 'romance' between R & H was more lust than actual chemistry. She seemed to swoon at every single muscle on his body. Too much!- She seems to have a dual personality. She's timid and shy and whiplash!
