Finished just because I'm determined to read all the book club books this year. Extra star because there were parts that had me turning quickly. But the author was really just following on the dystopia series trend and not very well.

Meets Expectation.
The world building is interesting. I felt like it didn’t hold my attention very well, though. It’s fine. Meets the expectations I had. Not sure I’ll finish the series. Writing style is acceptable and the story does flow. But. Character development is very limited.

Overall, I thought this was a good book for what it is; intense YA dystopia.

A cross between Hunger Games and Red Queen. The overall premise is getting rather common (supposedly ordinary young girl from marginalised group definitely isn't ordinary, and is in right place at right time to become figurehead for rebellion), however the writing style was engaging and I enjoyed the book. There is plenty of action and enough apparent changing of sides/loyalties to keep one guessing (although lacking a bit in subtlety/nuance). It would be nice for one of these sorts of stories not to focus on the/a love triangle for a change, there isn't a magic button that suddenly gets switched on at 18, but it wasn't too bad in the first one. It gets a bit over for the top in the second book, but I'm still intrigued enough to want to see how things play out.
*****I received this book for free through the Kindle first program.*****
For 75% of this book, I was muttering under my breath about yet another Divergent/Hunger Games clone. And then for 25% of the book, I was really enjoying the read.
What that adds up to is a 3-star book, and an intention to read the rest of the series. I guess that's a good outcome?
Secondborn deals with a dystopian future where there are factions doing different things for society and a large group of people are oppressed. Then a special person among the oppressed becomes a hero. That could describe many, many books, right? Bartol does a good job of giving us something to care about beyond the rehashed plot devices. Good characters, okay action scenes, and a cool environment help. Some underdeveloped and one-dimensional characters don't. And the cheap romance novel love stuff is hideous.
Regardless, I ended up enjoying this book more than I expected. I hope the series takes a turn toward a more serious and dark style, which will definitely help move this from tween fiction to something more my speed.

Normally I one star any DNFs, but this one doesn't deserve that. I just wasn't feeling it.
**Reading this the second time (after reading Traitor Born), I’ve decided to give it 4 stars. I like the characters and the political aspects of the story. I also love the Reykin storyline but remember it being bigger the first time around. There is obviously a lot of world building because it’s a dystopian novel, but the world is fascinating. It really feels like old England with aristocracy and inheritance being to the eldest child. There are also people who can’t move beyond their class or caste, it’s really fascinating. **
I would give this 3.5 stars only because I fee like it took a long time to get started. Once it picked up, it was definitely enjoyable and I will read the next one, I just wish it didn't have such a slow start.

I loved this! This was a great start to a new Dystopia series and I had a really hard time putting this down. I listened to the audible version and have nothing but good things to say about the narrator. I am limited to when I can listen and if I had the time, I would have listened straight through to the end.
I'm a fan of this kind of series and I especially love a female warrior. I really liked Roselle's character.
The unfairness to her situation and all Second Born situations makes you root hard for her to succeed. So much seems to be against her that you can't really see that happening. I also liked that I couldn't predict what needed to happen for her to cause change. By the end of this book, I'm still not sure how she is going to succeed.
This did have the feel of Hunger Games, but with it's own unique twist. I will be anxiously waiting for book 2!
