My Kindle First pick for July. Happy with my decision! The first 25% of this book was quite slow, a lot of world building and information presented in a not so subtle way, but, I'm glad I stuck with it! Once I got into it I grew to love the characters, (including the main character which is something I sometimes struggle with), and I didn't want to put it down. Can't wait for the next book!

Ok I really did like this book. I listened to it on audio (free with KU). It is definitely your classic YA dystopian. The premise was a super cool idea, but I almost wish there was no romance in it because it killed it for me.

SpoilerI was sooo over Hawthorn by the end of the book and I wasn't rooting for them at all. That whole bull shit of him "being in love with her since he was 10" and them not having sex was so cliche. Ruined the story for me a little bit.

I might continue with an audio read of it but it isn't high on my priority.

Secondborn is a great idea, with second born children seen as inferior to first borns. They're denied lots of rights, they can't procreate, they have to 'transition' into a set job based on the area they're born in, while their older siblings are allowed to do whatever they want.

It's a fast paced book, with interesting characters and several twists.

The only complaint I would have is the writing style. Sometimes things are explained well enough, or it's a bit too fast paced and things feel rushed. But it's a great idea and I can't wait to find out how the series ends.

Someone wanna tell me why the main character is a highly skilled and very well trained soldier and yet is constantly being "rescued" by some man??
The underlining story has me intrigued. But the author throws in like 20 love interests, not to mention a Frozen-like love story where they know each other for like 30 seconds and are in love. If the books focused less on all the hot dudes and more on Roselle's personality and opinions and motives, I'd be very into this series. But it feels so childish, even for a YA. No girl at any age dreams about being a strong female who can never do anything herself. Let Roselle kick butt and smash dudes heads into tables more often. Stop having dudes show up when all hope is lost to save everything.
Roselle ain't no damsel so stop making her one.

3 stars because the story is interesting. But only 3 because why are there so many hero dudes trying to get into her pants?

Hard to stay engaged

While the basic plot idea was intriguing the over all character development was not. I liked the main character but the description of the main line interest was annoying and hard to read. Some of the plot points were jumpy.

Bon, mais pas particulièrement séduite par cette nouvelle saga. J'ai toujours mon petit coup de coeur pour Kricket...

Reminds me somewhat of the Red Rising series, which is a nice comparison. Different Fates (areas) in society have different functions and are pitted against each other. Quick read that set up the books to come well.

It took me a while to get into this book. I felt like at times there were huge jumps in the story line...however at the end it all managed to make sense.

I won a copy of this book on my kindle in a goodreads giveaway. While this book was all over the place I actually enjoyed it. I'm not feeling the romance angle of it but there's a possibility I'd check out book two.

The concept of this book is really well done, however the writing and storyline is disappointing. I feel as though the writing could be improved. The romantic storyline is also not believable and there is a random jump in the mid,e of the book. Do not reccomend
