I really wanted to like this one. The premise is something that I'd usually eat up. A school shooting. Emotive dialogue. But for me personally it failed to live up to my expectations. The start was great, I could feel my heart thumping in my chest as my brain realised what was going on. It conjured up images that made my heart ache, both for the adults and children. It made me think how I'd cope in a situation like that- the truth is, I wouldn't.
After that initial introduction, the story was very slow and I struggled to connect with the characters, something I hadn't anticipated especially after the emotive and heart wrenching start. I stuck with it but it was a real struggle. I didn't look forward to picking it up due to the pacing. I am going to check out the author's other works but for me this just didn't work.

Dit boek was mijn eerste kennismaking met het werk van Abigail Dean en na diverse enthousiaste reacties over haar vorige boek, Meisje A., was ik hier erg benieuwd naar. Helaas heeft dit boek me niet echt kunnen overtuigen.
In het boek wisselen diverse perspectieven en tijdsprongen zich af. Door de duidelijke markering per hoofdstuk is het goed te volgen, maar het geheel doet wel wat chaotisch aan. Al in het begin lees je twee perspectieven op Dag één die duidelijk maken dat er meerdere belevingen van de dag zijn en wat je direct nieuwsgierig maakt naar hoe die dag nu echt is gelopen.
En langzaam maar zeker kom je daar meer over te weten, maar wat mij betreft iets te langzaam. Tot de helft van het boek wordt zo'n beetje alles in het midden gelaten en hoewel ik snap waar de auteur vandaan komt, werkte het voor mij niet. Tegen de helft ging ik me er vooral aan ergeren.
Gelukkig werden er vanaf dat punt ook langzaam meer antwoorden gegeven, maar toen werd het ook wel weer wat voorspelbaar. Dit boek kon het voor mij niet snel goed doen..
Ben ik alleen maar teleurgesteld? Nee, dat ook zeker niet. Het gekozen onderwerp wordt goed belicht, de schade van fake news ontzettend raak beschreven en de toevallige (positieve of ongelukkige) keuzes of gebeurtenissen kunnen iemands lot bezegelen of veranderen. Uitstekende thema's waarin Dean laat zien dat ze de kern vat, maar de vorm had van mij anders gemogen.

Day One is set in a picturesque village called Stonesmere. It epitomises a sleepy rural place where a terrible event changes everyone’s life in a couple of minutes when a lone gunman enters the local school. However, this deviates from the usual approach at this point as it delves into the lives of two characters- one, Marty who is the daughter of a teacher who is one of the fatalities and the gunman Trent. Abigail Dean builds on the uncomfortable heart-wrenching emotions associated with atrocities and writes in an emotionally intelligent and innovative perspective. Highly recommended but be ready for an emotional roller coaster.

While I rationally understand the sad reality of the school shootings and the (maybe) burning need to examine the lives of those who passed and of those who stayed to live with these circumstances - the main emotion of this novel for me is "boredom". I am sorry. But this novel is seriously prolonged, full of unnecessary detail, late to reveal the key factors and investing too much into judging the "conspirators" only to reveal that the truth might be more complicated. The heaviness of the arcs is softened by the humanity of the last chapters, yet...the good editor with the clear critical skills might do much more justice for this story.
