It pains me to admit that I gave up on this book at about 200 pages (and months of trying to engage) . Weir is the author responsible for my love affair with Tudor history, but I just can't get into her fiction. She excels at portraying history in her non fiction, but I think it's hard for her to step into the emotional states and humanness (is that a word?) of these historical figures. I felt like I was reading exposition after exposition and did not gain much of the personal connection to Katherine that I was hoping would be explored.

I think I will be sticking to her non fiction in the future, although I had really hoped to display this series on my bookshelf.

I found this book very interesting. You can tell the author did her research on the history. I did struggle the second half the book, it seemed to drag on and I found myself skimming pages.

The story of Henry VIII and his six wives always seems like one of the most known periods from English history, yet reading this book through the perspective of his first wife has taught me so much more.

The most interesting part to me is that, because the lives of his wives overlap, we are introduced to Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour from Katherine’s perspective. I really enjoyed this take on history, and I am intrigued for when I read book 2 how these overlapping events are written through Anne’s eyes.
