An interesting retelling of beauty and the beast, and I really enjoyed reading it. I found the last 1/4-1/3 of the book impossible to put down, but thought the climax and falling action was too hurried.

Reread after many years, the book is not the paragon I remember (a decent amount of misogyny, colonialism and racism along with heaps of rich, white privilege from all characters), but the Beauty and the Beast retelling, the Victorianna porn and the magic system still keep it in my recommend with conditions set of books.

An interesting re-telling of a well known tale, this story is set in a world with complex rules and realistic characters.

Rose is intelligent and inquisitive, James is arrogant and flawed, and their story is magical yet realistic.

The parts where Paul du Mont was the narrator were the ones I least enjoyed, as I was probably supposed to.

An enjoyable read with a couple of unexpected twists.
