I enjoyed this book so much more than I thought I would! I was a little hesitant to pick it up at first but I’m so glad I did. You’ve got to love a possessive demon with a soft spot for the main character only.

This was my first time reading a paranormal romance book, and holy crap it was amazing!

This was an okay read for me. I loved that it wasn’t your typical dark romance—leaning into the paranormal side had me excited (a demon falling for a paranormal investigator is such a fun setup!). Leon and his smart mouth were a highlight, but I struggled with Rae since some of her choices felt questionable. The ending also fell a bit flat, though I’m curious to see how the next two books expand on the story.

this book literally made me crave romance so badly i signed up to hinge and am now seeing someone… slay LOL

If Her Soul to Take was supposed to steal my soul, it can keep it, I’m not fighting to get it back. The chemistry between the characters? Nonexistent. I’ve seen more believable sparks between two wet noodles. The romance felt so forced, I half expected someone to yell “Action!” between every scene. The plot wandered around like it was lost in a haunted corn maze, and not in a fun, spooky way more like, “Who let this thing get published?” Honestly, I kept reading just to see if anything would improve. Spoiler: it didn’t.

Where do I begin? Full of BDSM? Yes. My kind of thing? No. That said, it is well written and the plot was interesting. The characters? Not developed enough. I fundamentally think this is where the author should have invested a bit more effort. Take Raelynn…she’s mortal, sexually open to submission and rape fantasies, a college student, a paranormal investigator, and horrifically stupid. I felt absolutely zero connection to this character and she’s a main character. And then there’s Leon…a demon with blood lust, enjoys causing pain and somehow has a heart of gold and doesn’t lie to the human he’s in love with. Again…why should I care about this character?

She could have fleshed out the characters by adding details and depth like what was Raelynn majoring in and what beliefs and values does she have? She saw a ghost once but what happened and how was it life changing? She had a messy breakup with her girlfriend before moving to Abelaum, what happened there and why does Raelynn believe she’s hot to trot for assholes? And what about Leon? He just seems like he’s angry and horny all the time. Is there more to him? He has over 400 years of existence on Earth, why not get more of his history? Why not hear about his life in Hell and what it’s like there?

I had zero connection with the characters except Cheesecake. I can’t believe I essentially read another book for the pet. The cat was the star of this tale.
