New to me author! This was exciting, spicy with a really cool plot! Leon and Rae were hot as sin and they kept me completely invested! Both characters were well developed and complex. I love a good PRN and this hit so well for me. The secret society of crazies was intriguing and I honestly would have loved more history on the cult. I’m hoping to maybe get more from Juniper’s story! This was a great concept and really enjoyed it!

If I didn't have the audiobook for this one, it might have been a DNF because I would not have found the will to pick it back up and dedicate all my time to reading this one. I finished this on 2.5x speed while dying my hair, and even then I found myself bored...

When it comes to dark romance, my expectations for the plot are pretty much non-existent. I am here for the spice, I could care less about them falling for each other, but I need some tension, yearning, chasing, pining.. something to keep me interested in their story. I felt like the pacing for the romance/spice was really weird, like Leon and Rae's first interaction includes him dirty talking her and they have full PIV sex on like their second time being alone, and this was around 35%. So.. the rest of the book we don't get any of the super high tension, teasing scenes that you might expect from a dark romance/smut book, something that will culminate in the end, us finally getting the payoff we've been waiting for. I don't mind if they're intimate early on, but save some of it for later!! I need something to anticipate.. if they get it all out of the way 35% through the book and the rest is just them doing the same thing, I'm bored and ready to move on to another book.

The pacing aside, I just didn't connect with the characters sadly. Our FMC, Rae, had the intelligence of a peanut and it was unbearable to read about her constantly making the absolute worst decisions possible. 50/50 shot and she still failed every single time. The MMC Leon was more interesting, though he felt a bit stale even still. He was hot, but he wasn't as charming and didn't have as much of a distinctive personality as I'd have hoped. For being a literal demon, I was expecting more monster, but most of the time he just felt like some guy which was a bit disappointing. At least he had a forked tongue...

I know that a lot of smut scenes can read a bit cringey at times, and it's just part of it, but the dialogue between these two had me cringing more than I typically would for a dark romance. At times it felt like I was reading about that one couple who would always make out in the hallway in high school...

ANYWAYS... I'll continue the series as I've heard many say it gets better with the second and third books.
dark emotional tense slow-paced

A little too much sex and a little too little plot but overall a great read.
