I gotta admit, its not Allison Pataki's fault I didn't love this book more. Mostly, I was incredibly frustrated with Marjorie's utter lack of self control and discernment when it came to the men in her life. It kind of feels like she careened from one hopeless relationship to another, ignoring all the red flags in the process. Four husbands and each marriage a spectacular failure. Sure, those guys were doozies, but she was also a common factor, so...... I dunno. it was frustrating to see her enter one doomed relationship after another.

She did, however, live an incredibly fascinating life, the kind most of us can only dream of. She had more money than one person could possibly spend (although she did her best to try!), she hobnobbed with the rich and famous and powerful and she wielded no small power herself. There's no denying her generous philanthropy and the loyal love of her family and staff- certainly she had many great qualities that helped propel her to where she was.

This book tells us her whole life story, so we don't stop in one time or place for long, and her life spanned some pretty epic decades in world history: WW1, the roaring twenties, The Great Depression, WW2, the Could War, etc. As the author said, multiple novels could have been written about various stages of her life. So in this novel, we get just a brief glimpse into the primary episodes that shaped and revealed her character.

This book caught me by surprise. Historical fiction, but reads a lot like a biography. A fascinating and sweeping look at the life of a woman that helped shape America (and the world). I’m amazed that I had never even heard of Marjorie Post until reading this book!

This was a big endeavor. I learned a lot but it’s hard to read about a multi-millionaire given our current political climate. The writing style was fine and I didn’t love the MC
