Okay, so I did the audiobook version and I feel like that made it so much worse. I do not recommend. The voice narration was absolutely dreadful. Howl and Calcifer were mean and horrible sounding which made it hard for me to finish. A lot of the ideas/concepts in this book are really cool and special but I think the movie was able to take all those amazing parts and elevate them!

What a whimsical ride!

My affection for the author was heightened futher when I found out that she gently trolled JRR Tolkien at his Oxford lectures - basically by being the only one to show up to his lectures when he wanted to leave and just finish Return of the King.

This is a very well-written book. The characters change as you get to know them. The storyline also seems to expand as you get to know it. It seems a YA/Juvenile would need to be well-read before reading this to understand much of what was going on, but it is nice that it's not written as simply as much of that genre.

This book took me an embarrassingly long time to finish. I’m a big fan of the movie and felt like knowing the gist of the story was making me bored. That being said, I finally hunkered down and the tail end of the book completely changed my attitude. I found myself excited to read it again, and the last page alone left me grinning. Calcifer is somehow more lovable in the book- and Howl has way more character development. I’m glad that I share the trait of stubbornness with Sophie, because I don’t regret forcing myself to finish reading.

I honestly loved this book. This book is the first one in the series, and I absolutely loved it. The ending was such a good way to conclude the first book. The slow-burn romance, the magic, I just love it so much. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this book and series. 5/5
