I picked this up at random but honestly didn’t really care for it.  There was detailed settings immersing you into the world but there was no character development, the overall plot fell flat, and it was incredibly misogynistic.  There were also some terms through I that I didn’t like and while it might have been published 2001 it’s still pathetic.  Honestly, I was just waiting for it to end.  I only finished it out of spite.

This was my first Agatha Christie book.

It was a bit slow for me. The audiobook was great, but with so many characters, it was hard to keep up. I found myself distracted a lot. I’ve heard this one wasn’t her best, so I’ll definitely try her other books.

Loved the premise though and that ending!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I had a good time with this one! It was my first Agatha Christie so I don't have anything else to compare it to in terms of the rest of her bibliography, but I did feel as though this one was very slow-moving. It got to be repetitive at times, due to most of the novel depicting Hercule Poirot interviewing all of the Halloween party attendees on what they saw, their theories, and their relationships with other partygoers and townspeople. Although it was repetitive, I will say that I did not find this predictable at all - I was questioning whodunnit until the very end. I really enjoyed the way that Christie brought everything together at the end (and showing that even the smallest of details sprinkled throughout the novel played a big role in the murderer's reveal) - it proved how well thought out the story was and that I could never be a detective lol. If you are like me and will pick this up for the Halloween vibes I think you'll be slightly disappointed (the only time Halloween/Autumn-time was at the forefront was when it was mentioned that it was a Halloween party), but I would still pick it up if you're a fan of classic mysteries.

I am definitely looking forward to picking up more of her works in the future!

This felt very victim-blame-y ??? When they’re discussing the girl who was murdered, they bring up that she was ‘mature for her age’ (Poirot used the word ‘sexy’… she’s 12-13) and said that could have been partly to blame for why she was killed. Mrs Oliver also said she didn’t like her and found her to be boastful and annoying, to which Poirot says ‘the personality of the victim is the cause of many a murder’. There was another comment earlier when two kids were caught making out and Mrs Oliver noted very unnecessarily that the 12 year old girl’s chest was well developed for her age……

How was this written by a woman?

After careful consideration, I have decided that I do not like this book.

First, the first half of the book talks about the dismantling of mental health hospitals. But it is not a constructive conversation. Rather, it blames individuals with mental health diagnoses for violence and murder. It is a horrible conversation that goes nowhere. It literally stops halfway through the novel so even the abelist B$**S^#* has no end goal.

Second, a child is murdered and everyone goes about their life like normal. No one grieves for her, not even the parents and siblings. Also, everyone says horrible things. It is dreadful. Even the most dreadful twelve-year-old would be mourned better. And any neighborhood would be abuzz with the gossip of what happened.

Lastly, the end was predictable. At least the majority of it was. The part that was not, looking back was not built up well. Then there were parts built up that were not followed through.

You can’t love every book by an author. However, the more I read by Agatha Christie the more problematic she is. I plan on reading the books I already own and that may be it for me.

The mystery was interesting and kept me guessing but there was so much ableism from so many people and all of it in pretty much the exact same words, that I expected the whole village to be in on a cover-up. But no, it was just ableist.
