Beautifully written stories that lit moved me so much 😩😩😩 I don’t remember anything about Cuban revolution and Castro from school so I liked this intimate insight through pov of women! Have to say tho the jumping from diff timelines and locations was low-key jarring cause I could never remember the dates I had read before ! Otherwise a must read !!!!

It was difficult for me to keep track of the various stories, but the end was very touching ❤️

Beautiful story spanning several generations of women hopping between 19th-century Cuba to modern day Miami, Cuba, and Mexico. Carmen steadfastly lives in the present, Jeannette wants to learn from the past, and Ana and Gloria strive for a better future, but all sustain themselves with admirable strength with a sprinkling of vulnerability although coming from varied backgrounds. At times, I did find the jumping timeline disorienting and would have to remind myself of which year the story was currently set in, but overall I greatly enjoyed this novel.

Thank you to Flatiron Books for this ARC in exchange for a honest review.

4.5 stars! I was not expecting the type of emotions I had while reading this book. Its much different than my usual reads, but I still found it very good. The only reason I'm giving it 4.5 stars and not a full 5 is because the time lines were a bit confusing, and it jumped around a lot. Over all though, I would definitely recommend it

Not a ton to say about this one except that it was a solid book with some solid themes

Type of read: Commuter Read.

What made me pick it up: I think I saw it in a suggested list? Or another friend added it to their TBR and I liked the description?

Overall rating: An absolutely beautiful telling of generational strength and the grit the women in the story used to overcome challenging times. There is some scene and setting jumping, but it's always prefaced with who and what year, I find that extremely helpful but did have to continually remind myself to pay attention to who was talking and where we were at in the storyline. I found 'Of Women and Salt' to be tragically poetic and real. Not everything is always tied up with a pretty bow, no matter how hard we work or want things to work out. I would absolutely recommend 'Of Women and Salt' and honestly, I may read it again in print to see what I missed or didn't listen closely enough to during the audiobook.

Reader's Note: 'Of Women and Salt' includes themes of drug use and abuse.

I love the way the author wrote this book. The chapters are vignettes into the lives of different women living in different times. The way the author weaves the stories of these women through time is fantastic! The way the author speaks of the Cuban revolution is so fascinating. It's like shes lived all these lives at the same time. There is a monumental amount of empathy required to write something like this. I wish I could do the author justice in this review. I recommend reading this. Its definitely my favorite book this year.

3.5 ⚡️⭐️

Honestly I liked this book a lot but I had a hard time following the timeline since it was non linear. I found myself having to stop and go back to the beginning of the chapters or go back to others to recollect and get myself on the right track.

But regardless of my timeline struggle, Gabriela’s writing was beautiful. I loved reading this. I loved her flow and style of writing.

I find I really like generational stories and I enjoyed this one from multiple voices. Women’s voices. Immigrant women daughters of immigrants. And women who started it all for their family. This book was not a joyful read but it was deep and hit a lot of hard topics.
