I loved this story, it was a bit entirely what I expected, and I thought multiple times over “what were you thinking?!”, but it was an interesting and different read. The author wasn’t super likable to me,  and she has some really dark thoughts that she doesn’t hold back. I could see someone not liking the book as well if they just don’t like Cheryl and wanted a more likable person to read about.

Cheryl Strayed is a badass Pacific Crest Trail queen! And yet, she's also a complex human with thoughts and feelings and doubts and struggles. The power of Cheryl Strayed is that she manages to convey all this with the most understanding and humanity I think I've ever witnessed in another person. In this memoir, she expertly weaves her experience hiking the PCT — complete with all its hardships and triumphs, interesting and transformative moments — with her ruminations on everything that led her to that fateful summer. Being taken on that journey alongside her was truly a privilege, and I will always respect her for that. This was a powerful, powerful book, and I can't imagine not recommending it for years to come.

Thoroughly enjoyed. Her writing was a breeze to read, but the narrative style was complex and wonderful. I almost feel as if I've made this monumental journey with her, which is saying a lot considering how sedentary I am.

After adding the content warnings, I would like to say that ...
the part at the beginning about her mother's death from cancer was VERY emotional, like I wept -- but it was doable, and important to the rest of the narrative... But I truly wish I had never read the part about her mother's horse. If you are at all upset by animal death, absolutely skip that section -- as soon as she starts talking about going home in the winter and seeing how old & frail her mother's horse was. Skip it.
