To begin, I really enjoyed Donoghue's book Room so I was excited to read another one of her books. I was thoroughly disappointed.
First of all, the plot premise rested on the relationship between Jenny and Blanche. When Jenny is murdered, Blanche is heartbroken, running fearing for her life. But Blanche and Jenny have only known each other for about a month, and really only spent a handful of days together. I see zero relationship built up between the two of them. Also the queer baiting in this book is absolutely ridiculous.
Additionally the rampant asian hate and xenophobia is absolutely atrocious. I don't care about it being "historically accurate." It was not necessary to the plot (also when is it ever necessary?). Instead it is just there to constantly take a jab at Asian Americans and immigrants. The spelled out pronunciations of racist voice mocking of Asian Americans selling their wares made me want to throw this book against a wall.
Additionally, literally none of these characters were likeable or even redeemable except for maybe Jenny and she only gets maybe a handful of pages throughout the book.
I simply cannot with this book.
