Not my favorite of the black jewels books but still very good.
Upon further read: 4.5 stars. I like this book more and more every time I read it.
Reread #umpteen: reading them in chronological order this time... and started with this book. It's a different take if you have no idea who Daemon or Dorothea are. They are CLEARLY more the protagonists than the opposite.

Good addition to the world of Black Jewels - engaging characters and plenty of adventure.
I wish I hd read this before I read the Black Jewels Trilogy. I think much of that book would have made more sense to me.
I really did enjoy this book. However, some of the slave characters were too similar. It was hard, at the end, to remember who had done what through the book.
Overall, though, it was a good book that I enjoyed. Some of the characters will stick with me for awhile, especially Thera. She was pretty amazing.

I gave it some time and then tried this book. It's set long before the first three books of this dystopian fantasy. Daemon is a secondary character in the story of a man and a woman trying to survive the plans of the evil queen. The bad folks are still just too cartoonish and the main and ancillary characters seem too standard and cardboard. It's not worth trying another.
The first 30-40 pages were hard to get into for me, there was just some choppiness and so much going on?
But once the book hit it's stride about 1/4 of the way in I really enjoyed it. This is a great fantasy read in a unique universe with a well constructed magical system. I know it's setup as a prequel and I'm now interested in what the triolgy is like.

Absolutely glorious. I loved every page. It started with my dear Daemon making an appearance in the beginning and the ending, and it spread as I was reading the adventures of a male trying to understand the female mind, all while playing a deadly game of cat and mice.
I was also impressed by how this book was tied to the trilogy. Absolutely brilliant.

I loved reading this book. I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed getting to know the new characters and embraced Daemon's short appearances. I really enjoy a good book that can keep me awake at nights and this happened more often than not while reading this book.
Basically this is a prequel to the trilogy and it is also connected to the end of the trilogy. I read it after the trilogy but that didn't confuse me at all.

I really can't put this book down even if it is the second time I am reading it. I like the humor, the world building, Daemon's appearances. I couldn't remember who was the traitor so it was fun re-reading it. I also enjoyed very much the last chapter Daemon appears and lets slip something that connects him with the Black Jewels Trilogy. I simply loved the book.
Every time I re read the book, I always have a vague idea of who the traitor is but I never remember if it's that guy or the other one xD which is quite funny. And I have read it at least five times now xD
