Maybe Daphne Du Maurier just isn't for me. I thought I would love her since I loved the Hitchcock movie of Rebecca, but now after 2 novels (Jamaica Inn and Frenchman's Creek) I think I was mistaken.
Jamaica Inn is just too dramatic for my tastes. Everything is over the top and hyperbolic to within an inch of its life. It's just unbelievable and silly too many times for it to even begin to be plausible.
The reason this book isn't a one star for me though, is the beautifully moody descriptive nature writing and the strong willed main heroine. Otherwise this book is honestly a dud. I'm going to watch the new BBC adaptation of this movie though, maybe I'll like her work better on screen? Who knows?
FYI: I won this book from a Goodreads Giveaway.

I adore De Maurier’s Cornwall and how atmospheric the tors are. This was a great book with lots of morally grey but interesting characters.

I read this during a trip to the seaside and absolutely loved it. The ending is obviously of its time but I thought it was really gripping and quite horrifying at times.

Would have given this 4-4.5 stars, BUT the last chapter pissed me off SOOO BAD. All of that inspiring, relatable 23-year-old-girl character development thrown away at the eleventh hour over a MAN . I loved hearing Mary’s internal debates with herself about what she wants from life, her goals, and her ability to reason with herself and stay level-headed even in times of great distress. I could even have let go of the predictable reveal at the end because of Mary’s bravery and De Maurier’s phenomenally descriptive and atmospheric writing, if it hadn’t been for the last few pages. Everything that I had come to relate and admire Mary for was thrown away like the rest of the book had never happened.
