Compulsively readable, Dolly Alderton's EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT LOVE is a hit for a reason. This reads like the stories and advice your much cooler older cousin treats you with while she smudges on eyeliner and sneaks out the window at a family function. A love letter to female friendship and to the messiness of your twenties meant this was exactly the sort of book I wanted to read this summer at 24. Bonus points to me for just spending the past year in the UK and appreicating all the nuances of the Britishisms that I would argue define the magic of this memoir. An example I will turn to when I need to demonstrate the power of a personal narrative and the voice that can come through with a talented author. Such fun!

p.s. this MIGHT be the instruction manual for a proper brat girl summer.

maybe controversial, but also not since this is a p popular book, but i really liked this. i don’t feel like it taught me anything about myself necessarily or like i saw myself exactly but this was such a raw/candid telling of her experience of love/being loved/loving that i think deserves the hype it gets. was dolly unhinged at times? absolutely, but i think she knows that too and your 20s (i am in my 20s) are an uncertain time. i think my favorite kind of love in books is between friends, it’s beautiful and i want it for everyone and im so glad dolly wrote about her experiences of love with her friends (and what it’s like to be jealous when those people find other kinds of love don’t act like you all have never been jealous or felt some type of fomo because people in your life are experiencing something you’re not). i saw someone say that the take away from this book shouldn’t be to love your friends or something like that and that felt very reductive. at the end she’s very clear about what she has and hasn’t experienced so idk what’s up with that reductive comment like the takeaway was love is there for those who have the eyes to see it!!! lol but for real in my opinion, it’s that we have love in our lives in different ways and that we’re deserving of love no matter what. it’s that love is probably going to look different from what we imagine and that’s okay. there’s also stuff about growing up and understanding yourself thrown in this book too besides the focal point on love. overall, i thought she was funny and appreciate this book/her experience. i think it’s always a privilege to read a really well written memoir because ultimately i don’t know dolly but i enjoyed getting to know her through great writing and many of her not so great moments (but also some pretty good ones and tons of recipes that made me wish i was more of a chef lol).
