Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

Sky in the Deep follows the story of Eelyn after she discovers that her brother – who died five years ago – is actually alive. It includes a lot of Viking-esque elements that I really enjoyed, but overall I kind of hated the story. From what I can tell, Adrienne is a first time author and the book had enough potential that I might pick up something she writes later on. But in Sky in the Deep, there were a lot of plot elements that I think were supposed to pass for character development, but it didn’t really work that way. For example, Eelyn kept jumping back and forth about if she would forgive her brother. One chapter she is ready to forgive him for everything and the next she wishes he was still dead and the one after that she’s ready to forgive him again. She jumps back and forth without any real explanation, even though I can see where the author was trying to accomplish. But the romance… That was so badly done. The love interest is basically just this random character that you don’t have any connection to or know anything about (at least I felt that way), and then ten minutes later they’re making out and completely in love with each other. Ughhh. This kind of “romance” is exactly the reason why I’m started to get frustrated with YA.

As a recap, Sky in the Deep had a lot of potential but it didn’t follow through in the least.

Super fun read! I enjoyed the world building and Adrienne Young's portrayal of viking culture. The dramatic question of whether Eelyn would trust the Riki or not was really fun to read about. I loved seeing her character grow from seeing the war through the side of her enemies and gaining empathy through learning more about them. I also loved how her love of the Riki grew through the different characters, like Inge, her mother figure. Or Fiske, her love interest. Eelyn was well rounded and strong but vulnerable and I loved seeing the world through her eyes. Excellent book!

This book deserves more hype. Vikings, feuding clans coming together to take down a common enemy, family ties vs. soul ties. This book I couldn’t put down! 5 stars.

There wasn’t enough romance and it felt very action packed but it was dry.

3.5/5 rounding down to 3 stars. I quite liked this book actually. Loved the Vikings aspect and the romance hidden under the storyline of two neighbouring enemies. I only wish it were longer. With just over 300 pages, the second half felt rushed. Would read again.

This is decent, but a very generic YA fantasy.
