What was the point of this book?

4.5/5

A collection of short stories. They didn’t seem to go anywhere and ended in cliff hangers.
dark emotional tense medium-paced

i’ve read three collections of short stories this year and all of them have been odd. maybe the point of these stories is flying way over my head but i didn’t feel any depth.

Not a book for me.

This collection of short stories would generally be better titled “what we talk about when we talk about lust,” though there are plenty of other emotions covered here, resulting in stories that ranged from frustrating to downright horrifying.

Two stories made this an “okay” read for me: “The Bath” for it’s portrayal of parents coping with a child in the hospital, and “Everything Stuck to Him,” which perfectly depicts the sleepless nights of having a new baby.

Perhaps I’d have appreciated the other stories more if, like these two, I found them more relatable. But most of these stories are about abusive, alcoholic, middle-aged men and I just can’t empathize.

I wish I read the same book as everyone else that has left a review. I don’t know if this is a sign of my intellect or not but I don't see how everyone is leaving rave reviews about this book. I tried to take each story from both sides of the spectrum. Face value and a deeper meaning that needed to be found between the lines. It seemed like almost every story was about a man with an affinity for whisky, an inner battle with their toxic behaviors, and how it affects everyone else around them.

I would say the most entertaining thing about this book was that each chapter was a different story and we didn’t have to sit with the same insufferable man.
