Certainly not the most cheerful stories, but a few really powerful ones, especially near the end.
I thought these short stories were supposed to be about love, but I think this book could easily be retitled “What We Talk About When We Talk About Alcohol, Infidelity, and Death“. Although I was bummed by the lack of adherence to what I thought the topic was (and I had some amount of discomfort from each short story), it’s clear Carver is a great short story writer. I read an online analysis of each short story after I read them which was interesting to expand upon what I had gleaned myself.

if i had a nickel for every time i read a short story collection by a ‘great writer’ that was boring as hell i would have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s annoying that it happened twice
