Enjoyable, tragic and a little heartbreaking. I feel bad for Genya, who is a quiet spectator ruled by everyone but herself. She may be my favorite character after The Darkling.

Because I am a doll, and a servant. Because I am a pretty thing and a soldier all the same.

You can read the short story here.

It was nice to read and see a little part of Genya. She had a sad past which explained why she sided with the Darkling and betrayed Alina. Typical minion, don’t you think? But we all have reasons why we do what we do after all, as Alina had said about Genya. I hate how she thought of Alina though.

This short story is indeed short but it’s length makes it interesting. It had just the right amount of words to make you understand Genya.

I’d recommend this if you want to know more about the Genya and the reason behind her actions.

My review can also be seen here.

Now tell me why those 18 pages with Genya was way better than Shadow and Bone? I would love to have a whole book dealing with her!

I was disappointed here.  Since it was 0.5 in all the lists, I thought it would be a real backstory for her, but instead it was a scene from her perspective after she leaves Alina in the infirmary.  It isn't a bad scene, but to call it 0.5 is just misleading because it doesn't really give us new info - she was abused by the king, the queen is awful to her.  That's all we got.
