Tellement mauvais, empreint d’une affectation insupportable. Un personnage qui affirme nonchalamment qu’elle comprend les violeurs, en plus de les défendre en justice, c’est juste dégeulasse.

grabbed hold of me almost instantly and didn't let go until the end

Smart and insightful. This novel whips past you with short concise sections. I found out at the end that it may be autofiction, which is surprising to me because so much autofiction comes off as banal. This novel, despite covering daily life and common occurances, is engaging all the way through.

Having come fresh from one of the most dense and unenjoyable I've read to date, I found the pace Playboy highly refreshing. I found the narrator to be obnoxious and petulant, but I don't think I was supposed to like her. I'm confused about the extent to which it is supposed to be autobiographical, knowing that a lot of the protagonist's background is from Debré's own life.

It's for these reasons that I made mental comparisons between Playboy and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath  - a middle class white woman who takes swipes at others and makes random swipes at ethnic minorities for shock value, but also reveal interesting sadism in their masochistic tendencies.

I think my favourite aspect is the lesbianism, because I'm always hungry for more lesbian media.
