I have a love / hate relationship with this book. I actually learned a lot and was able to apply it at work immediately. But some of the style annoyed me, like we get it Richard, you are brilliant and everybody would be better off if they would just listen to you. But I really enjoyed reading about his class sessions and appreciate the teaching around thinking about how you think.

This is the first book that I've seriously highlighted, mainly because it struck a chord with me and seemed to be full of sensible advice about the characteristics of both good and bad strategy. I can see myself using some of the content at work to help me and my colleagues develop better strategies and avoid some of the pitfalls.

If you had to start somewhere with reading about strategy this is a very good place to start. I've got several years of experience in government doing strategy and I've studied it academically as well, so I'm applying a wide evidence base and this is a good book about strategy.

read this for my product team book club @ work -- boring, outdated, random.... 1 second he's telling me about war strategy, the next he is mansplaining astronomy ... the very beginning about "strategies" often not being strategies at all and just being full of fluff was useful as i work my team's strategy for the next year at work, but other than that ... big big yawn

Some good points but nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking. It was also way too long-winded and could have been summed up more succinctly.

Truly don't understand why business books can't be a blog post. Also some wack analysis - criticized wheel and spoke hubs for airlines, criticizing lasd programs without offering solutions because he knows that anything he offers won't actually be a good idea. It's not as bad as some tho.

A fine book on strategic thinking, it describes a straightforward, almost common-sense framework for developing meaningful, actionable strategies.

The text abounds with illustrative examples and counter-examples of the concepts. As of 2023, some of these are a bit dated and may be readily skimmed or omitted entirely if you don't need any further convincing about a given chapter. There is a delicious glee in looking at the busted-up bits and shards of broken strategies. Ah hindsight... you never fail to entertain.

I understand why "Good Strategy Bad Strategy" is so highly regarded. I wish I had discovered it years ago.

The book had way too many (now dated) examples and stories and not enough guidance on what takeaways we should get from them, or guidance on how to be better at strategy. I got the most value out of the first few chapters only.
