This book is set in the first year of college but would probably be classified as YA. I’m genuinely amazed at how much depth and complexity the authors managed to cram into a relatively short book. Themes of identity, independence, growth… read this book!

oh mY GOD

THIS BOOK

I want this to be a movie now.

Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved it!!

I never went to university but if I did, I’d totally want what Alex and Molly had. The progression of their relationship was so well written and I really enjoyed the ride.

I also really enjoyed their individual character arcs. Both of them finding themselves, realising what they want and then having the confidence to go for it. With them being polar opposites, I feel like every reader will find that they relate to one of them - for me, it’s Molly.

It was so obvious what was going to happen with the romance but it didn’t stop me from grinning ear to ear.

I want an Alex.

I highly recommend this book - even though it’s a YA, it didn’t feel like one.

Also, the authors are married! How cute is that!

Pretty good!

She Gets the Girl is a sweet romance set in freshmen year old college (yes to more of this kind of setting please!) starring two completely opposite girls with a similar goal: getting the girl.

There's a lot I like about this one. The chemistry between the two leads, Alex and Molly, was done wonderfully. There's a lot of great funny moments- some where just too secondhand embarrassing for me to take, but the ones that landed were genuinely good. It's an easy to read, relatable story, albiet predictable.

Now, what I didn't like. There wasn't as much substance as I would've liked. There's an entire plot line (well, it's next to nothing there, so I'm not even sure if I can call it a plot line) surrounding internalize racism and adoption that's handled poorly. You get a "blink and you miss it" resolution (again, if you can call it that) near the end that just feels like the authors needed to wrap this up on a deadline. Same with the other storyline of being a child of a parent with addiction- whereas that plotline had more depth it still was resolved too quickly for my liking. I wanted more complexity and development.

I also didn't understand Alex's motivation or her interest in Natalie at all.
Natalie is straight up vile! Saying Alex will end up like her mom? Knowing what she knows about her mother's addiction? Was there a point we were supposed to like Natalie or was she Warren from Legally Blonde and just set up to be a villain. I would've preferred for some context on why Alex so desperately wanted to be with her.

Despite those complaints, I did enjoy reading this. It's funny, cute, and the romance was done well. Everything else I wanted more of.

(This is me nitpicking but this is NOT enemies to lovers! So happy I didn't go into this expecting that kind of trope.)

My first ever romance book, I’m glad I started with this book. However, I feel that with all the pop culture references  it won’t age as well in a few years

A lesbian book written by a married couple? Sign me up for that.

I really can't believe how much I loved this book.

On one side we have Alex, who is a confident girl but has never been able to maintain a committed relationship.  Then we have Molly, a socially anxious teenager who has never had the courage to talk to the girl she likes.

I liked the contrast between the two characters. I loved that both personalities complemented each other; Alex motivating Molly to come out of her shell and take risks, and Molly pushing Alex to be honest and express her emotions.

Reading how these two beautiful characters slowly fell in love was absolutely everything. It was from a I-don't-love-you-so-much to friends to lovers, and I was fascinated by every single one of their scenes together. The way they open up to each other and feel so safe and comfortable around each other made me so happy.

She Gets the Girl was a fun yet emotional read that I wasn't expecting at all.

I loved having two POVs; the authors complement each other perfectly. The fact that it's a collaboratively written book and is so beautiful shows the effort on both sides to add their unique touch. And gosh, I recognize that so much.

I can't help but stress how good this book is. I loved the writing style. The chemistry between Molly and Alex was superb, and I still think the fact that the book was written by a married couple in real life made it even more romantic. The slow burn kept me itching for more and I would have loved to see more of them as a couple.

One of the elements I enjoyed reading about was the relationship and the impact the mother figures have on the characters. Seeing such different dynamics was quite enriching. Alex's mother struggles with alcoholism, and Molly's mother has a difficult relationship with her identity as a Korean-American adopted by white parents that she passes on to her. That speaking of, I felt a lot of affection with Molly's mom. I will be starting college in two months, and moving to a new city in one. I am extremely anxious being my first time away from home and outside of my family circle. Seeing the way her mom treated her reminded me of my mom. My mom already worrying about what I will eat, the friendships I will make, how I will survive on my own. I honestly cried watching their relationship.

Overall, it was a pretty beautiful book and I enjoyed every second of it. Highly recommended to those who love sweet lesbian teen romances, with a bit of a slow burn, and that take place in college.
