Montgomery's self insert fanfiction and God, I wish that was me. 😩
Oh my. What a read. A novel published in 1926 that still feels relevant and poignant to today. I wish I could say that the stigma of unmarried women is no longer a micro-aggression, but it is. And the pressures (both cultural and otherwise) to stay loyal to family that is not loyal in return is a timeless condition for many as they enter adulthood. You simply can't help but love Valancy and root for her throughout the novel. This story will be beloved for anyone who wants to see a main character grow, as well as any romance reader (especially those who love the marriage of convenience trope). I found it especially similar to Mimi Matthews' [b:The Belle of Belgrave Square|59426171|The Belle of Belgrave Square (Belles of London, #2)|Mimi Matthews|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1644886640l/59426171._SX50_.jpg|93603356]. Ultimately I loved how this story had all the feels of a classic while still being plot driven, character focused, and unputdownable!

Loved it! Even more so because it was written in 1926.
There is no such thing as freedom on Earth, he said. Only different kinds of bondages. And comparative bondages.
You think you're free now because you've escaped from a peculiarly unbearable kind of bondage. But are you? You love me. That's a bondage.
Who said or wrote that the prison unto which we doom ourselves, no prison is? Asked Valancy dreamily, clinging to his arm as they climbed up the rock steps. Ah, now you have it, said Barney. That's all the freedom we can hope for.
The freedom to choose our prison. But Moonlight. He stopped at the door of the Blue Castle and looked about him.
At the glorious lake, the great shadowy woods, the bonfires, the twinkling lights. Moonlight, I'm glad to be home again. When I came down through the woods and saw my home lights, mine, gleaming out under the old pines.
Something I'd never seen before. Oh girl, I was glad.

Where has this book been all my life?? I was a Ann of Green Gables fan growing up, but this book takes the cake–especially as a more mature, womanly "coming of age" story that feels so relatable. A new favorite!
